What this mod does

Brutal Traffic is the traffic mod by Kass, the author of Realistic Brutal Graphics and Weather. It doesn’t add new cars or trucks: it changes how your existing traffic moves, whether that’s the base game’s or a compatible traffic pack’s.

What it changes in the game

  • Traffic jams happen more often and more believably, especially on highways and city approaches.
  • The AI accelerates, brakes and keeps its distance more naturally, including with a trailer.
  • Better behavior at junctions and intersections.
  • Traffic density varies by time of day: busier during the day and quieter at night.
  • AI vehicles react to the weather, and there are events and accidents on the road.
  • The ratio of trucks and buses to cars is adjusted.

Who it’s for

For anyone who finds ETS2’s roads too empty or its traffic too robotic. It works with the base map and the map DLCs, and with many traffic packs. Third-party maps that bring their own traffic lights or traffic systems may cause conflicts, as can other mods that touch the same traffic definition.

Version

Version 8.4, updated on September 29, 2026, is compatible with ETS2 1.61. The author usually posts updates on his website and the SCS forum first, so in the future the Steam copy may take a few days to catch up. Make sure to leave the console traffic setting at g_traffic 1.

Highlights and things to keep in mind

Highlights
  • Jams and variable density that bring the roads to life
  • It adds no models, only changes behavior, so it's very lightweight
  • Author with widely used mods and frequent updates
Keep in mind
  • Conflicts with maps that bring their own traffic system
  • The Steam version may lag behind the forum and website versions
  • Some players notice more aggressive AI after certain updates

Requirements

  • Euro Truck Simulator 2 version 1.61
  • Traffic setting g_traffic at 1 (don't change it)
  • Don't use other mods that change traffic density or behavior at the same time

How to install it

  1. Go to the mod's page on Steam Workshop and click Subscribe.
  2. Open the game and go to the Mod Manager.
  3. Enable Brutal Traffic and move it to high priority, near the top of the list.
  4. If you use a traffic pack with new cars, keep it below Brutal Traffic.
  5. Check in the console that g_traffic is still at 1.
  6. Load your save and drive along a highway for a while to notice the changes.

Common problems

Does it add new cars or trucks?

No. It only changes traffic density and behavior; if you want more models, pair it with a compatible traffic pack.

What g_traffic value should I use?

The author asks you to leave it at 1. Raising it changes the density the mod already adjusts and can throw off the balance.

Does it work with third-party maps?

Yes, with those that use the standard traffic system. Maps that bring their own traffic lights or junctions may cause conflicts.

Why doesn't the Steam version match the forum one?

Kass posts on his website and the SCS forum first; Steam gets updated days or weeks later.
