What this mod does
Road into Wilderness (RIW) is Tony_Viborg’s Africa map. It started as a very long road from South Africa to Kenya and has since grown, version by version, across half the continent.
What it covers
- North Africa: Morocco, Western Sahara, Mauritania, Algeria, Tunisia and Libya.
- Sahel: Mali, Niger, Burkina Faso and part of Senegal.
- South and east: South Africa (remade in 2.1), Botswana, Kenya and an area around Nairobi.
- Truck dealerships spread across the map since 2.0.
Who it’s for
For anyone who wants very long trips through empty landscapes and African dirt roads. The author has separate connectors to link it with other Africa maps, such as Beyond or Horn of Africa.
Important technical note
The author says the buffer value in config.cfg must be at least 30; otherwise, the game crashes when you reach Nouakchott (Mauritania). It’s the most common issue with this map.
Version
2.3 (May 6, 2026) adds more cities and roads and is tagged for ETS2 1.59. There’s no version listed for 1.60 or 1.61, so it’s best played on 1.59.

- Euro Truck Simulator 2 version 1.59
- Beyond the Baltic Sea, Vive la France!, Going East!, Italia, Scandinavia, West Balkans, Greece, Nordic Horizons and Iberia DLC (the author asks for all map DLC)
- config.cfg buffer set to 30 or higher
How to install it
- Download 2.3 from the author's page on TruckyMods or with Trucky Mods Manager.
- Copy the .scs files into Documents/Euro Truck Simulator 2/mod.
- Open Documents/Euro Truck Simulator 2/config.cfg and raise the buffer value the author mentions to 30 or higher.
- Enable the map in the Mod Manager.
- If you want to link it with Beyond or Horn of Africa, add the matching connector from the same author.
- Load your profile and look for the African destinations on the map.

Common problems
Why does the game crash at Nouakchott?
Because the config.cfg buffer is below 30. The author asks you to raise it to at least 30.
Does it work on 1.61?
Version 2.3 is tagged for 1.59. It may fail on newer versions until the author updates it.
Is there left-hand traffic?
Yes, in the countries that drive on the left; 2.2.1 fixed bugs with that traffic.
