The Hytale materials you’ll need most come from four sources. Leathers come from animal hides tanned at the Tanning Rack. Cloth (Linen Scraps, Shadoweave Scraps and Cindercloth Scraps) is dropped by specific enemies. Wood comes from specific trees, like the Softwood Trunks from aspen, beech and banyan. And plants, like Azure Kelp, are gathered in water. Each material is tied to a gear tier: if you don’t have the right leather or cloth, you can’t craft that tier no matter how many ingots you have.
All names are given as they appear in the game. On the Spanish version of this page we noted that Hytale doesn’t have an official Spanish translation yet: the official website lists it among the planned languages, but not among the available ones. If you’d rather play in Spanish with a community mod, check out our Hytale in Spanish guide.

Cloth: Linen, Shadoweave and Cindercloth
Linen Scraps
Linen Scraps are the basic cloth and the one you’ll go through the most early on. They can’t be crafted: they’re dropped by skeletons (frost ones included), goblins, trorks, zombies and ghouls. They also show up in chests in structures inhabited by the undead and, now and then, in Fishing Traps. You need them for iron and thorium gear, several pickaxes and tools, repair kits and the Arcanist’s Workbench. They’re also one of the ingredients for upgrading the Workbench to tier 2, along with copper and iron ingots.
Shadoweave Scraps
Shadoweave Scraps are a dark cloth from the Outlanders, the humanoid enemies of Zone 3. Every variant (Berserker, Brute, Hunter, Marauder, Priest, Sorcerer, Stalker…) always drops them when you defeat it. They also turn up in Whisperfrost Frontiers chests, and you can recover them by salvaging cobalt gear at the Salvager’s Workbench. You use them for the whole cobalt line (armor, weapons, pickaxe and hatchet) and to upgrade three crafting benches. The tier 3 Workbench upgrade needs a lot of them, so it’s worth stockpiling.
Cindercloth Scraps
Cindercloth Scraps are the Zone 4 cloth. They’re dropped by burnt and incandescent skeletons, the Ember Golem and the Wraith, and they show up in Devastated Lands chests. They’re used for adamantite gear and the first backpack upgrade.
Leathers: Light, Medium and Heavy Leather
Leather is always made the same way: you kill the animal, collect its hide (Hide) and process it at the Tanning Rack. Each hide gives one leather.
- Light Leather: comes from the Light Hide of animals like chickens, goats, pigs, sheep, rabbits, deer, turkeys, rats or camels. It’s used for iron gear, the Iron Pickaxe and repair kits. Since Update 2, cows, horses, bison, boars and warthogs drop medium hide instead of light.
- Medium Leather: comes from the Medium Hide of cows, horses, bison, boars, wolves, hyenas, moose, snow leopards, sabertooth tigers and others. It’s the leather for thorium gear.
- Heavy Leather: comes from the Heavy Hide of brown and polar bears, yetis, crocodiles, the Cave Rex, the Trillodon, the Emberwulf and the Mosshorn. You need it for cobalt, adamantite and the tier 3 Workbench upgrade.
- Storm Leather: it’s made from Storm Hide at the tier 2 Tanning Rack, but that hide can’t be obtained in Exploration Mode. That’s why mithril gear still can’t be completed through gameplay.
Wood: Softwood Trunks and more
Hytale tells wood types apart. Softwood Trunks come from three trees: Aspen (the one with orange bark), Beech and Banyan. Oak and birch don’t count; birch did in the earliest versions, but it no longer does. You can confirm which tree you’re looking at by turning on the info overlay with F7.
Their main use is upgrading the Farmer’s Workbench to tier 2, which needs softwood trunks, Essence of Life, wheat and lettuce, and unlocks higher-tier crops. For almost everything else, any trunk works (Any Tree Trunk). Another specific wood is the Azure Log, which is essential for teleporters.
Azure Kelp and other plant materials
Azure Kelp is a blue seaweed that glows at night, so it’s easier to spot in the dark. It grows in the water of the Azure Forest biome, in small oases in Howling Sands and in rivers under the ice in Whisperfrost Frontiers. If you interact with it, you take the whole plant; if you break it, it drops Azure Petals. You can plant it anywhere there’s water in an adjacent block.
Its uses:
- Teleporter: at the Arcanist’s Workbench, 8 Azure Log, 2 Azure Kelp and 10 stone blocks make 2 teleporters. The number of teleporters you can have goes up with the memories you collect.
- Greater Energy Potion: at the Alchemist’s Workbench, starting from an Energy Potion.
- Salvage it at the Salvager’s Workbench to get Azure Petals.
Other basic materials worth always keeping on hand:
- Plant Fiber: comes from bushes and tree leaves. It’s used for copper gear, rope, potions and decoration.
- Essence of Life: you get it by harvesting ripe fruit and vegetables and from chests in Zones 1 and 2. It’s key for farming and alchemy.
- Essence of Fire: dropped by fire creatures in Devastated Lands. You need it to upgrade the Workbench and the Blacksmith’s Anvil to tier 3.
Which materials you need at each stage
- Copper: copper ingots, trunks and Plant Fiber.
- Iron: Light Leather and Linen Scraps.
- Thorium: Medium Leather and Linen Scraps.
- Cobalt: Heavy Leather and Shadoweave Scraps.
- Adamantite: Heavy Leather and Cindercloth Scraps.
- Mithril: Storm Leather, which can’t be obtained yet.
You’ll find where to get each metal in our Hytale ores guide. To check recipes and uses without leaving the game, the Advanced Item Info mod expands the info for every item, and if you’re hoarding lots of materials, Extended Backpacks gives you more space. Frequently asked questions
Where do I get Shadoweave Scraps in Hytale?
By defeating Outlanders in Zone 3 (Whisperfrost Frontiers): every variant always drops them. They also show up in chests in that zone.
How do you make Light Leather?
Kill small or farm animals (chickens, goats, pigs, sheep, rabbits, deer…) to get Light Hide and process it at the Tanning Rack. Each hide gives one leather.
Which trees give Softwood Trunks?
Aspen, Beech and Banyan. Oak and birch don’t work.
What is Azure Kelp used for?
Mainly for crafting teleporters at the Arcanist’s Workbench, together with Azure Log and stone. Also for the Greater Energy Potion.
Can you craft Linen Scraps?
There’s no recipe to craft them. You get them from enemies (skeletons, goblins, trorks, zombies), in chests and with fishing traps.
