In the current version of Hytale (Early Access) you can naturally find seven ores: Copper, Iron, Thorium, Cobalt, Silver, Gold and Adamantite. The progression order is copper, iron, thorium and cobalt (same tier) and, finally, adamantite. Mithril exists in the game, but it doesn’t spawn in the world yet: you can only get it from the creative inventory. Below you’ll find where each one spawns, which pickaxe to use and what it’s for.
All names are given as they appear in the game. Hytale doesn’t have an official Spanish translation yet (the official website lists it as a planned language), so Spanish-speaking players see the names in English. If you want to play with a translation mod, check out our Hytale in Spanish guide.
Hytale ores table
Hytale is split into zones: Zone 1 Emerald Wilds (temperate forests), Zone 2 Howling Sands (desert), Zone 3 Whisperfrost Frontiers (cold and mountains) and Zone 4 Devastated Lands (volcanic). Each main ore is tied to one of them.
| Ore (in-game name) | Where it spawns | Pickaxe | What it’s for | Stage |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Copper Ore | Zone 1 (Emerald Wilds), below the surface and in shallow caves. It also spawns in other zones. | Any, even the Crude Pickaxe | Copper tools, weapons and armor; crafting bench upgrades | Early |
| Iron Ore | Deep underground layers in every zone. It’s less common than copper. | Recommended: copper pickaxe | Iron gear and upgrading the Workbench to tier 2 | Early-mid |
| Thorium Ore | Zone 2 (Howling Sands), its main source: slopes, ravines and caves. Scarce in Whisperfrost. | Recommended: Iron Pickaxe | Thorium gear, Arcanist’s Workbench and tier 3 upgrades | Mid |
| Cobalt Ore | Zone 3 (Whisperfrost Frontiers), on the surface and underground. Also in the volcanic area of Zone 4. | Recommended: Iron Pickaxe | Cobalt gear and tier 3 upgrades | Mid |
| Silver Ore | Several zones, especially in mountains and rock formations | Recommended: Iron Pickaxe | Alchemist’s Workbench upgrades and crystal staffs | Secondary |
| Gold Ore | Several zones: calcite deposits, lake and river beds, cold mountains | Recommended: Iron Pickaxe | Alchemist’s Workbench upgrades, fire staff, decoration and furniture | Secondary |
| Adamantite Ore | Zone 4 (Devastated Lands), inside cooled magma surrounded by Cracked Magma | Required: Thorium Pickaxe or Cobalt Pickaxe | High-tier gear and backpack upgrades | Endgame |
| Mithril Ore | Doesn’t spawn naturally; only in the creative inventory | Not applicable | Mithril gear (can’t be completed through gameplay yet) | Future |
The game files also include Onyxium Ore and Prisma Ore, but they can’t be obtained through gameplay in the current version either.
Which pickaxe you need for each ore
Since Update 2 (January 2026), mining speed depends on the pickaxe’s quality, and low-tier pickaxes do much less damage to high-tier ores. The only hard lock confirmed in the official notes is adamantite, which requires a thorium or cobalt pickaxe. Everything else can be mined with worse tools, but it’ll take you much longer and wear down durability, so the practical move is to follow the pickaxe chain:
- Crude Pickaxe: stone, plant fiber and sticks.
- Copper Pickaxe: copper ingots, trunks and plant fiber.
- Iron Pickaxe: iron ingots, Light Leather and Linen Scraps.
- Thorium Pickaxe or Cobalt Pickaxe: they need the tier 2 Workbench. The thorium one uses Medium Leather and Linen Scraps; the cobalt one, Heavy Leather and Shadoweave Scraps.
- Adamantite Pickaxe: needs the tier 3 Workbench, Heavy Leather and Cindercloth Scraps.
You’ll find where every leather and cloth comes from in our Hytale materials guide.
Ore progression order
Progression revolves around the Workbench:
- Tier 1: you mine copper and iron in Zone 1 and craft your first gear.
- Tier 2: the upgrade needs copper ingots, iron ingots and Linen Scraps, and unlocks thorium and cobalt tools.
- Tier 3: the upgrade needs both thorium and cobalt (one can’t replace the other), plus Heavy Leather, Shadoweave Scraps and Essence of Fire. It unlocks adamantite and mithril tools.
Thorium and cobalt are the same tier, but you’ll need both. That’s why it’s worth visiting both the desert and the frozen zone before heading into Zone 4.
Every ore smelts 1:1 into ingots in the Furnace with fuel (sticks or wood). Upgrading the Furnace to tier 2 cuts smelting time by 30 % and expands the input slots from 2 to 3.
Thorium in Hytale: where to find it and what it’s for
Thorium Ore is a green ore that stands out against the desert’s warm tones. After the ore shuffle in Update 2, Zone 2 (Howling Sands) is its main source. Look for it on slopes, in ravines and in caves; according to the community wiki, it spawns next to patches of Cracked Mud. There’s some in Whisperfrost Frontiers too, but not much. It sometimes shows up in chests in those zones.
With thorium ingots you craft:
- Thorium armor at the Armorer’s Workbench (helmet, chestplate, gauntlets, greaves and shield).
- Weapons at the Blacksmith’s Anvil: sword, battleaxe, mace, daggers and shortbow.
- Thorium pickaxe, hatchet and hoe.
- The Arcanist’s Workbench, which you need, among other things, to craft teleporters.
- Tier 3 bench upgrades.
If your world predates Update 2, the ore changes only appear in new chunks: explore areas you haven’t visited.
Mithril in Hytale: can you get it?
Not yet. Mithril Ore and the Mithril Ingot exist, and there are recipes for mithril weapons, armor and tools, but the ore doesn’t generate in the world. On top of that, those recipes need Storm Leather, which can’t be obtained either. Simon Collins-Laflamme, head of Hypixel Studios, said in January 2026 that mithril won’t be as easy to mine as the other ores. So far, no update has added it to Exploration Mode; Update 7 (Chapter 1), in pre-release, doesn’t mention it in its notes either.
Some server mods add mithril generation. If you’re interested, check out our list of the best Hytale mods.
Crystals in Hytale and how to make glass
In Spanish, «cristal» can refer to two different things in Hytale:
- Crystals: colored blocks that glow in caves. There are blue, green, pink, purple, red, yellow, white, cyan and void variants. When you break them they drop Crystal Shards, and with shards of the same color you craft small, medium and large crystals and blocks at the Builder’s Workbench. They’re decorative and give off colored light. For example, blue ones are plentiful on the ceilings of the tropical jungle caves in Zone 4. Launch guides recommend mining them with the Iron Pickaxe.
- Glass (which in Spain is also called «cristal»): there’s no standalone glass block you can craft. If you smelt sand (regular, red, white or ash) in the Furnace, you get an Empty Potion Bottle for alchemy. Windows are crafted at the Builder’s Workbench or found in structures.
Gems work separately: according to the community wiki, emerald is dropped by the Earthen Golem, ruby by the Ember Golem, sapphire by the Frost Golem and Zephyr by the Sandswept Golem.
Tips for mining faster
- Craft a better pickaxe as soon as you can: since Update 2, pickaxe quality noticeably cuts the number of hits needed.
- Bring a spare pickaxe or a Repair Kit when you go on a serious mining trip.
- Mark good veins on the map with BetterMap, and if you play with mods, Vein Mining lets you mine the whole vein at once.
- To check what each block or material is at a glance, use Advanced Item Info. If you want to store your loot in metal chests, try Thorium Chests.

Frequently asked questions
What’s the best ore in Hytale?
In the current version, Adamantite is the highest-tier ore you can get through gameplay. Mithril ranks above it, but it doesn’t generate in the world yet.
Where is thorium in Hytale?
Mostly in Zone 2, Howling Sands, on slopes, in ravines and in caves. It’s green and easy to spot against the desert rock.
What pickaxe do I need for adamantite?
A Thorium Pickaxe or a Cobalt Pickaxe at minimum. You can’t mine it with lower-tier pickaxes.
Why can’t I find mithril?
Because it doesn’t spawn naturally yet. You can only get it from the creative inventory or with server mods.
Can you make a glass block in Hytale?
Not as a standalone block. Smelting sand in the Furnace gives you empty bottles, and windows are made at the Builder’s Workbench. Colored Crystals are crafted from Crystal Shards.
