Hytale was designed from the start to support mods, but with a different approach from other block games: all modding works on the server side. Understanding this will save you a lot of headaches when installing mods. This guide is based on the official Hytale blog and on the documentation from CurseForge, its official partner for distributing community content, and it’s been reviewed for Update 7 (0.7), released October 12, 2026: mods from 0.6 may need an update, so check that they have a file for 0.7 before using them.
How mods work in Hytale
According to the Hypixel Studios team, all modding is based on whoever hosts the server or game, and the game uses a single unmodified client. There are no plans to support client mods. In practice:
- On a multiplayer server, mods are installed by the server admin. You just join and the content is applied.
- In single-player, you’re also playing on a server: when you open a world, the game launches a local server just for you. That’s why mods are enabled world by world.
The official blog distinguishes several types of moddable content:
- Server plugins: Java
.jarfiles that allow deep changes to the game. - Data assets: blocks, items, creatures and world generation defined in JSON.
- Art assets: models, textures and sounds.
- Saves: worlds and prefab structures.
Since Update 7, a mod can include complete worlds. They appear in your world list, and the game asks for your permission before creating a world from a mod. If you later delete the mod, the world you created with it stays.
Where to download: CurseForge
Hytale has partnered with CurseForge as the official platform for community content. You can use its website (curseforge.com/hytale) or the desktop app. Holymod’s mod pages, like BetterMap or EyeSpy, link to the official page; we don’t host any files.
Installing with the CurseForge app
- Open the Hytale page in the CurseForge app and go to Discover or Browse.
- Filter by mod type and game version. Since Update 7, choose version 0.7.
- Press Install if the mod supports it. If only Download appears, download the file and place it in the mods folder, which you can open from the Hytale tab menu in the app itself.
- Enable the mod in the world where you want to use it (explained below).
Manual installation
- On the mod’s CurseForge page, choose the manual download option or go to the Files tab. Download a file tagged with version 0.7 if you’re playing on Update 7.
- Move the downloaded file to the Hytale mods folder.
- Enable it in the world settings.
According to the CurseForge blog, the global mods folder is located at:
- Windows:
%APPDATA%\Hytale\UserData\Mods - macOS:
~/Library/Application Support/Hytale/UserData/Mods - Linux:
$XDG_DATA_HOME/Hytale/UserData/Mods
If you later install that same mod from the Mod Browser, since Update 7 the installation works fine even if you had already copied it manually.
Mods in that folder are available to all your worlds. If you want a mod to exist only in a specific world, place it in the mods folder inside that world’s folder, at UserData/Saves/<world name>/mods.
Enabling mods in a world
This step is required whether you launch the game from CurseForge or from the Hytale launcher. Having the mod in the folder isn’t enough.
- Existing world: right-click the world, select the mods you want to enable or disable and press Save world settings.
- New world: in Create World, open the settings with the gear icon, check the mods, press Apply Settings and create the world.
The button names are taken from CurseForge’s documentation, in English. Since Update 7 the game has official Spanish, so if you play in Spanish they may appear translated.
Safety: be careful with .jar files
.jar plugins are Java code that runs on your computer when you open the world. A malicious .jar can do anything any other program can. So:
- Only download from CurseForge or the author’s official page.
- Be wary of files reuploaded to unknown websites, unmoderated Discord servers or shortened links.
- Check that the author has a track record, that the mod gets updates and that the version is compatible with yours (on Update 7, that it’s tagged 0.7).
- Never run an
.exethat claims to be a Hytale mod installer.
Backups and versions
Hytale is in Early Access and its team acknowledges there are crashes, some serious, that can cause data loss. They recommend making backups often. Before adding mods to a world you care about, copy its save folder. After every game update, check that your mods have a compatible version before opening the world.
Mods and Update 7 (0.7)
Update 7 («Chapter I: Out of the Breach») changes the plugin API, so mods made for 0.6 may need an update from their author. Before opening a modded world on 0.7:
- Copy the world folder. Since Update 7, worlds are upgraded automatically the first time they’re loaded, and you shouldn’t reopen them on 0.6.
- Check the 0.7 tag for each mod in CurseForge’s Files tab.
- Disable the mods that don’t have it yet in that world and re-enable them when the author releases the new version.
