To repair tools and weapons in Hytale you need a Repair Kit. You craft it at the Workbench, in the Tools category, with 2 Linen Scraps, 1 Iron Ingot and 1 Light Leather. To use it, put it on your hotbar, select it and right-click. A menu opens with everything worn out in your inventory: pick the tool, weapon or armor piece and its durability goes back to full. The catch is that its max durability drops a little every time you repair it. Since Update 7 (0.7), released October 12, 2026, there’s an alternative: the Goblin Repair Kit, which repairs without reducing max durability. On top of that, weapons, pickaxes and axes now last much longer than before.
Since Update 7 the game has an official Spanish translation, but we use the English names here, as in the official patch notes, so you’ll recognize them. If you play in Spanish, you may see them translated.
Repair Kit recipe
| Ingredient | Amount | Where it comes from |
|---|---|---|
| Linen Scraps | 2 | Basic fabric. We cover it in Hytale materials |
| Iron Ingot | 1 | Smelt iron ore in the furnace. We show you where to find it in Hytale ores |
| Light Leather | 1 | Tanned from Light Hide, the hide of small animals |
One craft gives you one kit, and each kit repairs a single item. Since it needs iron, you won’t be able to make it on your first night: you need a furnace and some iron ore first. The recipe was verified in Update 6; the official Update 7 patch notes don’t change it.
How to use the Repair Kit step by step
- Craft the kit at the Workbench, in the Tools category.
- Put it on your hotbar and select it.
- Use the secondary action (right-click with the default controls).
- A window opens showing the tools, weapons and armor in your inventory that aren’t at full durability. Click the one you want to repair.
- The item goes back to its max durability and the kit is used up.
Since Update 5, you can also repair items stored in your backpack without taking them out first.
The catch: every repair lowers max durability
Repairing with the regular kit isn’t free. Every time you use it, the item’s max durability goes down. According to the community wiki, the reduction depends on how worn the item was: if it’s almost broken it loses up to 10% of its original max durability, and if it was only half worn, less. Repairs stack, so a heavily repaired tool lasts less and less.
There are two limits:
- An item that has only lost 1 durability point can’t be repaired. The game shows the message «Repair penalty too large for this item».
- Once max durability hits the minimum (10) and the item is at 0/10, it can’t be repaired anymore.
These values were verified in Update 6, and the Update 7 notes don’t change them. When a pickaxe or sword is that beaten up, it’s better to craft a new one, ideally from a better metal, or repair it with the Goblin Repair Kit.
Goblin Repair Kit: repair without losing max durability
The Goblin Repair Kit is one of the seven goblin gadgets that arrive with Chapter I (Update 7). According to the official notes, it repairs items without reducing their max durability, so it avoids the regular kit’s downside. It’s the best option for expensive gear you want to keep for a long time.
The official notes don’t give its recipe or where it’s crafted, so we’re not going to make one up. It’s part of the Chapter I content, which kicks off when you explore the Goblin Lab in the Forgotten Temple. You’ll find the full context in our Hytale Update 7 guide.
New durability values in Update 7
Update 7 greatly increases the durability of weapons, pickaxes and axes, so you’ll need to repair a lot less. These are the official numbers:
| Item | Update 6 (0.6) | Update 7 (0.7) |
|---|---|---|
| Crude, Bronze, Steel and Frost weapons | 80 | 120 |
| Copper weapons | 100 | 200 |
| Iron weapons | 120 | 250 |
| Cobalt and Thorium weapons | 150 | 350 |
| Adamantite and Ancient Steel weapons | 180 | 500 |
| Crude pickaxes and axes | 150 | 200 |
| Copper pickaxes and axes | 200 | 300 |
| Iron pickaxes and axes | 250 | 500 |
| Cobalt and Thorium pickaxes and axes | 325 | 700 |
| Adamantite pickaxes and axes | 400 | 1000 |
What can and can’t be repaired
- Yes: tools (pickaxes, axes, shovels, sickles), melee and ranged weapons, and armor pieces.
- No: since Update 5, the Watering Can and fertilizer can no longer be repaired.
- Nearly new items: as we saw above, the regular kit won’t repair them if they’re only missing 1 point.
What happens when durability hits zero
According to the community wiki and guides that have tested it, the item doesn’t disappear, but it performs much worse. For shortbows and crossbows it’s confirmed in the Update 5 notes: with no durability left they can’t attack or use their special ability. So it doesn’t happen to you in the middle of a dungeon, always carry a spare kit.
How to use up less durability
- Use the right tool. Since Update 4, pickaxes, axes and shovels also lose durability if you hit wood with them. Chop with the axe and mine with the pickaxe.
- Watch the utility slot. Since Update 7, breaking blocks with a tool placed in the utility slot also uses up its durability.
- Don’t mine higher-tier ores with a weak pickaxe. Since Update 2, low-tier pickaxes deal much less damage to high-tier ores, so it takes longer and costs more hits.
Alternatives to the Repair Kit
- Goblin Repair Kit: since Update 7, it repairs without lowering max durability (covered above).
- Salvager’s Workbench: crafted at the tier 2 Workbench with 6 Iron Ingots, 5 logs and 5 stone blocks. It breaks down worn tools, weapons and armor and gives you back part of the base material. For example, according to the wiki, a copper pickaxe gives 1 copper ore and 2 sticks. It doesn’t need fuel.
- Craft a new one: if the item has already lost a lot of max durability, the most cost-effective move is to salvage it and make another.
- Other kits: the game also has the Crude Repair Kit and the Rare Repair Kit, but in 0.6 you could only get them from the Creative mode inventory, and the Update 7 notes don’t mention them. The Crude one also takes away up to 20% of max durability.
If you want to carry more kits and materials, take a look at Extended Backpacks.
Frequently asked questions
Where is the Repair Kit at the Workbench?
At the regular Workbench, in the Tools category, among the first-tier recipes. You don’t need to upgrade the bench to make it.
Why won’t it let me repair an item?
Either it’s at full durability, it’s only missing 1 durability point, or it has already hit the minimum max durability (0/10). In the last two cases you’ll see the message «Repair penalty too large for this item».
Is there a way to repair without losing max durability?
Yes, since Update 7: the Goblin Repair Kit repairs without reducing it. The regular kit still lowers it with every use.
Is there another way to repair without a kit in Exploration mode?
Not that we know of. The repair methods in survival are the kits: the regular one and, since Update 7, the Goblin Repair Kit. The alternative is to salvage the item at the Salvager’s Workbench and craft a new one.
Does the kit repair armor too?
Yes. The regular kit’s menu shows tools, weapons and armor pieces that aren’t at full durability.
