Hytale and Minecraft are open-world block games with exploration, building and survival, but they aren’t the same thing. Minecraft is a finished game, constantly updated since 2011, available on almost every platform and with a huge community. Hytale has been in early access since January 2026, only on PC, Mac and Linux, and leans more into RPG-style combat, dungeons and official modding built in from day one. It was also created by the founders of Hypixel, the most famous Minecraft server. This comparison helps you see how they’re alike and how they differ, without telling you which one is «better.»

History: from a Minecraft server to a game of its own
The connection between the two games goes way back. In 2013, Simon Collins-Laflamme and Philippe Touchette opened Hypixel, a Minecraft server famous for its minigames that went on to set several Guinness World Records. That same team later founded Hypixel Studios to make their own game, and in December 2018 they unveiled Hytale. When they announced it, they made clear that the Hypixel server would keep running as usual and that they were separate projects.
Hytale’s road was bumpy: Riot Games bought the studio in 2020, canceled the game in June 2025, and the founders bought it back in November of that year to release it in early access. We tell the full story in Hytale release date. Minecraft has no business relationship with Hytale.
Modding: the biggest difference
In Hytale, mods run on the server. The game uses a single unmodified client, and when you play solo your world is a local server. That’s why you can join a modded server without downloading anything. There are four types of content: Java plugins, data in JSON format (blocks, items, creatures, world generation), art assets made with Blockbench, and saved worlds or structures. The studio includes official tools like the Asset Editor, and CurseForge is its official partner for distributing mods. If you want to try it, there’s our guide to installing mods in Hytale and our list of the best Hytale mods.
In Minecraft it depends on the edition. In Java Edition, modding has been built by the community with loaders like Forge, NeoForge or Fabric, and many mods also have to be installed on each player’s computer. Bedrock Edition has official add-ons (resource and behavior packs) and a Marketplace where creators sell content.
Servers and multiplayer
- Hytale: you can open your world to friends from the in-game menu or set up a dedicated server with the official software. Hypixel Studios has promised to take no cut for the first two years from servers and modders who monetize their work, and that its share will never exceed 20%. We explain it in create a Hytale server and play with friends.
- Minecraft: it has Realms, its official subscription server service, plus thousands of community servers, Hypixel itself among them.
Combat and progression
Hytale is closer to an action RPG: weapons with abilities, blocking, dodging and enemies with their own behaviors. Updates keep adding dungeons with bosses, and Update 7 (Chapter 1) brings the first handcrafted dungeon and a rune-based ability system. Adventure mode, with a story, is being built in parts.
Minecraft has simpler combat and freer progression: you gather materials, upgrade your gear and set your own goals. Its classic «ending» is defeating the Ender Dragon, but you can play without ever going after it.
World and generation
Hytale’s world is called Orbis and it’s procedurally generated, but it’s split into zones with their own climate, creatures and difficulty level, RPG style. The studio is working on a new world generation system (WorldGen V2). You’ll find an overview in Hytale zones and biomes.
Minecraft generates a practically infinite world with biomes, and it has three dimensions: the Overworld, the Nether and the End.
Graphics
Both use blocks and pixelated textures, so at first glance they look alike. The difference is in the models: in Hytale, characters, creatures and items aren’t limited to cubes and have more elaborate animations, and the studio itself uses Blockbench to create them. Minecraft keeps a simpler, cubic look, which you can change with texture packs and, in Java, with shader mods. Before buying Hytale, check the Hytale requirements.
Which one should you pick?
- Minecraft is a good fit if you want a complete, stable game, to play on console or mobile, to play in Spanish or with friends on any platform.
- Hytale is a good fit if you have a PC, you’re drawn to more RPG-style combat and you’re into modding, and you don’t mind playing something in early access with bugs and frequent changes.
You don’t have to choose: lots of people play both. If you go with Hytale, start with Hytale price and what is Hytale and how to get started.
