What this mod does
X-17: The Nightmare is a psychological horror mod by hayato_kun_ofc that placed in the top 10 of the Hytale New Worlds contest. Its main creature, X-17, uses a native AI system to stalk you, watch you, trick you and take revenge.
The two threats
- X-17: the main stalker. The author warns that hiding may work… or not.
- X-18: a corrupted entity, added in 0.3.4, that watches over caves and mines and goes after anyone who spends too long underground, with lunges, grabs, blackouts and sudden disappearances.
How to play it
The author recommends trying it first in a new world with no other mods, in first person and with headphones, because it has spatial audio and original music. The page doesn’t document any commands or settings, but there’s a wiki on hytalemodding.dev and the code is on GitHub.
With Update 7
v0.3.9, from October 12, 2026, is the 0.7 version, and the author warns it doesn’t work on earlier versions. On top of that, the night music only plays once per night, X-18 gets a new look and there are minor fixes. With Update 7, Void creatures no longer spawn at night in the Echo of Orbis, so the nights belong to X-17. If you’re into horror, also check out Below Every Heaven.

Requirements
- Hytale (Early Access) on PC or server, version 0.7 (file X17NIGHTMARE_v0.3.9.jar; doesn't work on earlier versions)
- No dependencies: the Relations tab is empty
- Recommended: headphones
How to install it
- Open the X-17: The Nightmare page on CurseForge and click Install to set it up with the CurseForge app, or download X17NIGHTMARE_v0.3.9.jar from the Files tab (the file marked 0.7).
- If you download it manually, copy the file as is, without unzipping it, into the mods folder: on Windows, %APPDATA%\Hytale\UserData\Mods.
- Open Hytale, right-click the world, check X-17: The Nightmare in the mod list and save the world settings.
- On a dedicated server, put the file in the server's mods folder and restart it.
- For the experience the author intends, create a new world with no other mods and play in first person.

Not with this file: the author states that v0.3.9 only works on 0.7.
