Hytale skins: customize your avatar and the best mods

How to change your skin in Hytale: the avatar editor, official Update 7 cosmetics and the best skin mods for your character, armor and animals.

Updated: 24 Oct 2026

In Hytale, «skins» aren’t a file you upload like in Minecraft: your character is put together from pieces (hairstyles, clothes, accessories, colors) in the avatar customization menu, and those official cosmetics are handed out by Hypixel Studios with updates and with the Early Access editions. If you want more looks, mods are the way to go: Wardrobe and its packs for your character, armor sets with their own designs, and packs that give color variants to animals and creatures. In this guide we explain what you can change without mods, what Hypixel allows with mod and server cosmetics, and which are the best Hytale skins listed on Holymod, with their version and whether they already have an Update 7 (0.7) file.

How to customize your avatar without mods

The game comes with an avatar editor with individual pieces you mix and match however you like. Here’s what Hypixel Studios’ official patch notes say:

  • Pieces and colors. Update 2 (January 24, 2026) added new customization options «for everyone», such as masks, blindfolds and new mouths, reworked several hairstyles and made the customization menu show each color’s name when you hover over it.
  • Avatar presets. You can save several looks and switch between them. Patch 0.7.1 (October 13, 2026) fixed a bug where switching presets left you in offline mode until you restarted.
  • Hide armor. Since Update 2, the character panel has toggles next to each equipped armor piece so it isn’t shown and your clothes are visible instead. Servers can disable this option for PvP or immersion reasons.
  • Update 7 cosmetics. Chapter I, «Out of the Breach» (October 12, 2026), added more than 100 new options, many of them goblin-themed, and two sets you unlock by playing the chapter: Scrap Arcanist and Junk Pilot. If you haven’t gotten there yet, the Hytale Update 7 guide explains how to start the chapter.
  • Early Access editions. According to the first official FAQ (December 2025), special avatar cosmetics currently come with the Early Access editions; those editions are only sold during Early Access, but you keep their cosmetics afterwards. The studio promises to keep adding free cosmetics and never to sell gameplay advantages. Each edition’s price is in our Hytale price guide.

Can you use custom or modded skins?

Yes, but with rules. In that same FAQ, Hypixel Studios keeps official avatar cosmetics for itself (for now the community doesn’t make them) and, at the same time, makes it clear that modders can create visual mods: furniture, pets, hats and avatar cosmetics. There are three important caveats:

  • They’re only visible where the mod is. Anyone who wants to see those cosmetics needs to have the mod. In Hytale, mods run server-side: in single-player they’re enabled per world and in multiplayer the admin installs them, as we explain in how to install mods in Hytale.
  • They shouldn’t replace the official ones. The studio wants to prevent mods from overwriting official cosmetics.
  • Servers have more leeway. A third-party server can change cosmetics to fit its theme or sell its own cosmetics just for that server, as long as it still supports the official ones.

The patch notes and the FAQ don’t cover uploading an image file as a skin. Everything you’ll see in this guide is mods that add new pieces or change textures inside the game.

Before you install: skins and Update 7

The current version of Hytale is 0.7.3 (October 21, 2026). Update 7 changed the plugin API, so many 0.6 mods need their author to release a new file. Texture and cosmetic packs tend to cause fewer problems than Java plugins, but there’s no guarantee: in our mid-October review, most skin mods still had no file marked for 0.7. Back up your world before trying them and check the CurseForge files tab. What changed with the patch is summarized in the Hytale 0.7 patch.

Cosmetics for your character

Wardrobe: the foundation for modded cosmetics

Wardrobe recreates the game’s customization system so other creators can add hairstyles, clothes, accessories and even full player models through resource packs. On its own it doesn’t include any cosmetics: if you install it and the menu is empty, that’s normal. You use it by crafting the Cosmetics Mirror (five metal bars of any type and three white crystal shards) or with the /wardrobe command if you have permission. Its cosmetics don’t take up armor slots and, if one matches an official one in the same slot, the Wardrobe one is shown. It’s open source (AGPLv3). Version 0.3.5, from September 2, 2026, is built for Hytale 0.6.3.

HayHay’s Mob Cosmetics

HayHay’s Mob Cosmetics is the most complete pack for Wardrobe: more than 200 options inspired by the creatures of Orbis, with more than 20 mob heads, more than 100 head accessories, horns, ears, hairstyles, full outfits, capes and backpacks. They’re purely visual pieces, with no stats. It’s 9.4 MB and needs Wardrobe enabled in the same world.

HayHay’s Animal Masks

From the same author, HayHay’s Animal Masks adds 21 masks (bear, wolf, fox, sabertooth, Mosshorn, Kweebec…) crafted at the Tier 3 armorer’s bench. Heads up: they’re not purely cosmetic, because each mask gives 8% physical and projectile resistance, 14 health points and slight regeneration. It doesn’t need Wardrobe.

Echoes of the Raven Plague Doctor

Echoes of the Raven Plague Doctor dresses your character as a plague doctor with a raven mask: four pieces with stats similar to adamantite, poison resistance and regeneration, plus a spellbook that summons ravens (it costs 10 stamina and 5 dark feathers per use). If you only want the look, the author has a separate cosmetic version for Wardrobe.

Armor with a different look

If you’re tired of seeing everyone in the same cobalt armor, these packs change your look without breaking progression.

  • Outlanders Armor Pack: six sets with the look of the Outlander faction, three at cobalt tier (Berserker, Hunter and Priest) and three at adamantite tier (Marauder, Stalker and Sorcerer). The recipes are dropped by the Outlanders themselves.
  • Fantastic Knight Armor Pack: seven knight armor sets that aren’t crafted; you find them in fortresses, tombs and shrines, or buy them from collectors. The Soul Cage protects more than adamantite, according to its author.
  • Emerald, Sapphire and Ruby Armor & Weapons: four-piece armor and a full arsenal with a gem finish, all at adamantite level. They’re crafted at the Crystal Workbench and are the only ones in this guide with a 0.7 file (1.7.0, from October 12, 2026). The ruby one adds the Cinder line, with fire damage.

To display your sets at home, Armor Stand adds wooden or straw stands and is already updated for 0.7.

Skins for animals and creatures

Another highly searched kind of «skin» is the one that adds variety to wildlife. These packs only change the look: not behavior or loot.

  • Celly’s Wildlife Skins: thousands of random combinations for deer, moose, crabs, lobsters, lizards, flamingos and tetrabirds. It needs four other packs from Celly’s collection, including Beast Skins.
  • Celly’s Beast Skins: variants for foxes, wolves, hyenas, spiders, scorpions, crocodiles and bears (2,880 combinations for the spider alone).
  • Celly’s Avian Skins: owls, ravens, crows, hawks and bats.
  • Aures Horse Skins: more than 70 coats, manes and tails for horses, with improved animations when eating, sleeping and running. It only affects horses that spawn after you install it.
  • Aures Livestock Skins: more than 150 patterns for camels, chickens, cows, goats, mouflons, pigs, rabbits, rams and sheep, with rare variants.

If you also breed animals, Celly’s packs pair with Alec’s Animal Husbandry and Celly’s Baby Animals, and babies inherit traits from their parents. The basics of breeding are in how to tame animals in Hytale.

How to install and combine them

  1. Download the mod from its official CurseForge page (each mod page has the link), choosing the file for your game version.
  2. Copy the file into the Hytale mods folder or install it from the CurseForge app.
  3. Enable it in the world settings: having it in the folder isn’t enough.
  4. Install the dependencies: Wardrobe for the cosmetic packs and the four packs Wildlife Skins asks for.
  5. On a server, ask the admin to install them; the /wardrobe command needs its own permission.

You’ll find all mod pages of this type in the Hytale skins category.

Frequently asked questions

How do I change my skin in Hytale?

From the avatar customization menu: you pick pieces, colors and presets. You don’t need to download anything to use the official cosmetics you’ve unlocked.

Can you use Minecraft skins in Hytale?

No. Neither the patch notes nor the official FAQ cover loading a skin file: new looks come as official cosmetics or through mods like Wardrobe and its packs.

Do modded cosmetics give an advantage?

It depends on the mod. Wardrobe packs and animal skins are purely visual, but HayHay’s Animal Masks, the plague doctor set and the gem armor do have stats.

Will my friends see my modded cosmetics?

Only if the mod is installed in the world or server you’re playing on. The official FAQ says anyone who wants to see them needs to have the mod.

How do I get Scrap Arcanist and Junk Pilot?

By playing Chapter I of Update 7. The official patch notes present them as sets you unlock as you progress through the chapter.

Do these skins work in Update 7?

Emerald, Sapphire and Ruby Armor & Weapons and Armor Stand have a 0.7 file. The rest were still on 0.6 in our latest review: test on a copy of your world or wait for the author’s update.
