How to tame a horse in Hytale and other animals (Update 7)

Tame a horse in Hytale with carrots: steps, each animal's food, mounts, the Feed Bag, the Chicken Coop and whether there's breeding in Update 7 (0.7).

Updated: 24 Oct 2026

To tame a horse in Hytale you need carrots (Carrot). Find a wild horse in Emerald Wilds (Zone 1), walk up to it with a carrot in your hand and interact with it (F key by default) to feed it. When hearts appear, switch to an empty hand and pet it. From then on it won’t run from you and you can ride it with F whenever you want. No saddle needed. We tested this in Update 6 (0.6), and according to its official notes Update 7 (0.7), released October 12, 2026, doesn’t change taming. Heads up: it only works in Exploration mode, not in Creative.

Since Update 7 the game has an official Spanish translation, but we use the English names here, as in the official patch notes, so you’ll recognize them. If you play in Spanish, you may see them translated.

How to tame a horse step by step

  1. Get carrots. They grow naturally in the Emerald Wilds grasslands and show up in Trork camps and Kweebec villages. If you want a steady supply, craft Carrot Seed Bags at the Farmer’s Workbench and plant them in tilled soil.
  2. Find a horse. They roam in small groups around Emerald Wilds. You’ll find more tips to get your bearings in Hytale zones and biomes.
  3. Approach from the front. Horses kick if you come up from behind, and it hurts quite a bit. If you move too fast, they walk away.
  4. Check what it eats. When you interact with a tameable animal, a speech bubble shows the food it wants. For the horse, it’s the carrot.
  5. Feed it. With the carrot in your hand, interact again. If hearts appear over its head, it’s tamed.
  6. Pet it with an empty hand. Guides agree that petting doesn’t work if you’re holding something.

A tamed animal won’t run from you unless you hit it, and every now and then it greets you. If you’re holding its food, it follows you. That makes it easy to lead it into a pen.

How to ride and control your horse

  • Mounting and dismounting: interact with the horse (F). You steer it with the normal movement controls.
  • Sprint: galloping on horseback you cover the map much faster than on foot.
  • Jumps: it clears obstacles up to 3 blocks high.
  • Falls: according to the community wiki, you take no damage if you fall from a height while mounted, because creatures don’t take fall damage.
  • Combat: you can’t use weapons or tools while mounted.

Before Update 3, horses couldn’t be tamed: you hopped on a wild one and as soon as you got off it ran away. That’s why many old guides recommend tall walls or closed stables. With taming, you don’t need them anymore.

Which animals can be tamed and what they eat

These are the tameable animals in Update 6 and the food they like, according to the community wiki (cross-checked with Update 3 guides). The Update 7 notes don’t change this list. Babies are tamed the same way as adults.

Animal Food What it’s for
Horse Carrot Mount
Camel Tomato Mount. Lives in Howling Sands, near oases
Ram Apple Mount. In the mountains of the Howling Sands Badlands
Cow Lettuce Milk, with a bucket
Mosshorn Potato Milk, with a bucket
Sheep Lettuce Wool, with shears
Chicken Corn Eggs
Desert Chicken Cotton Eggs
Skrill Chilli Eggs (since Update 4)
Turkey Corn Farm
Pig Turnip Farm
Wild Pig Aubergine Farm
Boar Pumpkin Farm
Warthog Onion Farm
Bison Cauliflower Farm
Goat Apple Farm
Mouflon Apple Farm. Lives in Whisperfrost Frontiers
Rabbit Carrot Farm

The confirmed mounts are the horse, camel and ram. Some guides also list the mouflon, but the wiki doesn’t mark it as rideable.

Useful items for your farm

  • Feed Bag: crafted at the Farmer’s Workbench with 10 wheat, 5 vegetables of any kind, 5 fruits of any kind and 10 Essence of Life. It attracts livestock, and according to the wiki, if you leave it inside a pen, nearby wild animals end up tamed within one in-game day. In Update 6, tamed Mosshorns are also attracted to it.
  • Capture Crate: 4 wood and 50 Essence of Life at the Farmer’s Workbench. It lets you pick up babies and small animals and release them wherever you want. It doesn’t work on large adults.
  • Chicken Coop: 20 wood, 50 Essence of Life and 10 Plant Fiber (tier 3 Farmer’s Workbench). It holds up to three chickens placed with the Capture Crate and gives one egg per chicken per day.

To gather the wood, fiber and essences, check the Hytale materials guide.

Can you breed horses and other animals?

No. It wasn’t in 0.6 and, according to its official notes, Update 7 (0.7) doesn’t add it either. Hytale has no animal breeding: you can’t put two horses together to get a foal. Update 3 guides also noted that captured babies didn’t grow up. Hypixel Studios described taming as «a first version» and has said it will add more depth, but hasn’t given a date for breeding.

If you want it now, there are mods. Alec’s Animal Husbandry adds breeding and care for livestock and beasts, and Alec’s Nametags lets you name your horse. If you just want more coat variety, there’s Aures Horse Skins. To install them, follow how to install mods in Hytale.

What’s changed in recent updates

  • Update 3 (February 2026): food-based taming arrives, along with petting, milking, shearing and riding tamed animals.
  • Update 4 (March 2026): Skrill lay eggs, tamed chickens stop being skittish and Chicken Coops produce eggs.
  • Update 6 (August 27, 2026): tamed Mosshorns come to the Feed Bag. It also fixes a bug that stopped livestock from producing and another that counted Chicken Coop slots as taken when the animal had disappeared.
  • Update 7 (October 12, 2026): according to its official notes, it doesn’t change taming, mounts or breeding. It does bring changes that affect farming: raw fruit, vegetables and crops give a small health regeneration for 1 minute, and Shears collect leaf piles and recover plants you’ve placed. You’ll find the rest of the new features in our Hytale Update 7 guide.

Frequently asked questions

Do you need a saddle for the horse?

No. In Update 6 there was no craftable saddle, and the Update 7 notes don’t add one: you mount up directly by interacting with the tamed horse.

Why does my horse run away?

Most likely it isn’t tamed (no hearts appeared when you gave it the carrot) or you hit it by accident. A tamed animal only runs away if you attack it.

Can you tame a horse in Creative mode?

No. In Creative the tame or pet prompt may appear, but nothing happens when you use it. Play in Exploration.

Which animals can you ride in Hytale?

The horse (with a carrot), the camel (with a tomato) and the ram (with an apple), once tamed. If you’re just starting out, the what is Hytale and how to get started guide will help.
