What this mod does

Automatic Gates is one of the most downloaded quality-of-life mods for Stardew Valley. It makes fence gates open on their own when your farmer approaches and close as soon as you’re through, so your animals don’t escape and you don’t waste time clicking every gate. It only reacts to the player, not to animals.

Features

  • Since 2.5.5, gates only open if you’re facing them.
  • Optional closing delay (GateDelay, in milliseconds), also adjustable with keys.
  • Per-save list of ignored gates: the numpad 9 key brings up an overlay that marks ignored tiles in red, and you add or remove them with the mouse buttons.
  • Since 2.5.2 it supports multi-key combinations.

Compatibility

The 2.5.5 file (March 27, 2026, 21 KB) «only works with Stardew Valley 1.6.x and SMAPI 4 or later» (see the SMAPI mod page). It’s tagged as Android-compatible and has no known issues according to the author. It works without touching any options; everything is adjusted in config.json. Split-screen was tested in 2.4 with good results, although the author doesn’t confirm online multiplayer.

Download it from Nexus: SMAPI’s compatibility list warns that the ModDrop copy is out of date. It has no text to translate.

How to install it

  1. Install SMAPI first (see its mod page) and launch the game once with it to make sure it works.
  2. Open the Automatic Gates page on Nexus Mods, go to the Files tab and click Manual download on the main file (AutomaticGates 2.5.5). You need a free Nexus account to download.
  3. Extract the .zip outside the game folder and move the resulting folder into the Mods folder, inside the game folder.
  4. Launch the game with SMAPI and walk up to a fence gate while facing it: it will open on its own and close once you're through.

Common problems

Can animals get out through open gates?

The mod only opens gates for the player and closes them once you're through; animals don't trigger them.

Can I stop a gate from opening on its own?

Yes: turn on the overlay with the numpad 9 key and mark that tile as ignored.

Where do I download it?

On Nexus Mods. SMAPI's compatibility list warns that the ModDrop version is out of date.
