No, Stardew Valley isn’t free: as of October 23, 2026, it costs €13.99 on Steam Spain and Mex$ 149.99 on Steam Mexico. What is free is everything that comes after: there’s no paid DLC, and its creator, Eric Barone (ConcernedApe), promised in July 2024 that he will never charge for DLC or an update. The only legal way to play it without buying it is Xbox Game Pass. Prices can change with sales.

Does it have DLC or paid editions?
No. Stardew Valley is sold in a single edition and every major update has been free, including 1.6 (2024), which added new content for players and modders. On July 22, 2024, ConcernedApe wrote on X that he swore «on the honor of his family name» never to charge for DLC or an update as long as he lives. His next game, Haunted Chocolatier, is a separate title.

- Co-op multiplayer, online and local. On console, online play may require the platform’s subscription: on Switch, for example, Nintendo says you need Nintendo Switch Online.

Has it ever been free?
There’s no record of an official Stardew Valley giveaway on the Epic Games Store, Steam or other stores. It is part of Xbox Game Pass, though: as long as you pay for the subscription and the game stays in the catalog, you can play it without buying it. Neither Steam nor Nintendo’s store page offers a demo. It often drops in price during store sales, but never to free.
Where should you buy it?
On PC, Steam, GOG and Humble sell the same game, with versions for Windows, macOS and Linux. If you want to use mods, the PC version gives you the most freedom: SMAPI works with both Steam and GOG copies. On console and mobile each store sets its own price and the purchase isn’t shared across platforms, so it’s worth deciding beforehand where you’re going to play.
Watch out for «free Stardew Valley» on pirate sites
Pages offering «Stardew Valley full free», modded APKs or «portable» versions distribute pirated copies. Downloading them infringes ConcernedApe’s rights, they often come with misleading ads or malware, and they don’t get official updates. It doesn’t make sense either: it’s a cheap game that’s often heavily discounted. We don’t link to any of them.
What is free: mods
Practically every Stardew Valley mod is free. The SMAPI loader and the Content Patcher framework are free, as are huge expansions like Stardew Valley Expanded or Ridgeside Village.
