What this mod does
Real life traffic density is kworey‘s traffic density mod for American Truck Simulator. Don’t confuse it with Cipus’s Real Traffic Density: it’s a different mod with its own formula. It aims for realistic flow without the gridlock that makes driving unbearable.
What it changes
- Very detailed 24-hour cycle with smooth transitions: heavy traffic at rush hour and very little at night.
- Reworked ratios of cars, trucks and buses using the author’s own formula.
- Tuned spawn and despawn distances to keep vehicle counts balanced.
- It doesn’t touch AI behavior: it uses SCS’s logic, which improved yielding in 1.59.
Compatibility and order
It works with any traffic vehicle pack and any map, but it’s incompatible with other density mods. It goes above all traffic mods. If another mod doesn’t edit the traffic spawn file (traffic_spawn), there shouldn’t be a conflict.
Version and issues
Version 2.0 works on ATS 1.59 and 1.60, according to the author, and the mod was updated on September 21, 2026. You may wait 30 seconds to a minute at some intersections. In big cities like Phoenix traffic can look thin because of how the game distributes vehicles. There’s an ETS2 version.

How to install it
- Open the Real life traffic density page on Steam Workshop and click Subscribe.
- Disable any other traffic density mod.
- Enable the mod in the Mod Manager and place it above all traffic mods.
- Drive at different times of day to notice the 24-hour cycle.

Common problems
Is it the same as Real Traffic Density?
No. That one is by Cipus; this one is by kworey and uses its own formula.
Does it change how the AI drives?
No. It only changes density and spawning; the behavior is SCS's.
Does it work with JazzyCat traffic packs and others?
Yes, with any vehicle pack; it only clashes with other density mods.
Why is there little traffic in some big cities?
According to the author, because of the number of nearby streets or poorly defined traffic areas in the game.
