In Hytale you can’t craft glass as a block in Exploration mode. We checked this in Update 6, and the official notes for the current version, Update 7 (0.7), from October 12, 2026, don’t mention any new glass block recipe. If you put sand in the furnace, like in Minecraft, you get an Empty Potion Bottle, not a glass block. To add glass panes to your house you have to use windows, which are made at the Builder’s Workbench: 1 log or 1 wooden plank gets you 2 windows. What’s new in Update 7 is visual: several windows now have clear glass and village windows have tinted glass.
What happens if you smelt sand in the furnace
The Furnace is crafted at the Workbench with 6 logs and 6 stone blocks of any kind. It runs on logs, planks, Charcoal, sticks, sap or plant fiber; logs last the longest.
1 sand block gets you 1 Empty Potion Bottle. Any sand works: regular Sand, Red Sand, White Sand and Ashen Sand. Those bottles are the basis of alchemy: you use them to make health, stamina and other potions at the Alchemist’s Workbench. You can also combine two bottles there to make a large one. These recipes were checked in Update 6 and the Update 7 notes don’t change them.
A note from Update 7 about potions: health, stamina and energy potions now stack up to 10, and health potions share a 15 s cooldown. So it’s worth keeping spare bottles around.
If you upgrade the furnace to tier 2 (with copper, iron, thorium and cobalt ingots), it smelts 30% faster and goes from 2 to 3 input slots. We explain it in Hytale ores.
Where to find sand
- Beaches and coastlines, by the sea.
- Shores of large lakes. Riverbanks tend to have sandstone, which doesn’t work.
- Howling Sands deserts (Zone 2).
If you’re not sure where to go, check the map in Hytale zones and biomes. For the rest of the basic resources, see our Hytale materials guide.
How to make windows in Hytale
First you need the Builder’s Workbench. It’s made with 6 logs and 3 stone blocks, either from your inventory (pocket crafting) or at the Workbench. Since Update 4, everything you craft on it comes out instantly.
Windows are in the wooden furniture section. Each furniture style has its own, and almost all of them come in pairs. We checked these recipes in Update 6; the Update 7 notes change how several windows look, but don’t say anything about their recipes:
| Window | Ingredient (1 unit) | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Simple Wooden Window | Ash, Fir, Oak or jungle fern log, or Hardwood planks | 2 windows |
| Crude Window | Lightwood or Softwood planks | 2 windows |
| Tavern Window | Cedar log or Darkwood planks | 2 windows |
Each wood’s decorative and ornate planks also work. Since Update 4, windows no longer need blocks next to them for support, so you can place them anywhere you like.
In Update 6 there were 19 window types in the game. Some, like the Kweebec one, show up in villages and structures. Others (Goblin, Primordial Scarak, Royal Magic and Scarak Hive) couldn’t be obtained in Exploration mode. If you want to see a full list, the Builder’s Workbench shows you the recipes available with your materials.
Do windows have glass? What Update 7 changes
In Update 6, many didn’t: village windows were frames with no glass, and others used opaque textures. Update 7 changes that. According to its official notes:
- The Lost Civilization, Kweebec, Tavern and Wind Temple windows now use clear glass.
- Village windows are no longer empty frames: they have tinted glass.
- The bottles on the alchemy table (the Alchemy Bench in the notes) also use clear glass.
It’s a visual change: the notes don’t say the window recipes change, and they don’t add any new glass block recipe. For example, the notes don’t touch the Tavern Window recipe in the table, but the Tavern window now shows clear glass.
One more thing: the Update 6 notes mention new footstep sounds on «glass blocks,» but there’s no recipe for any glass block in Exploration mode, not in Update 7 either.
Don’t confuse glass with Crystal
If you look for glass in the game, you’ll come across items called Crystal. They’re colored mineral crystals used in recipes, not glass. The Builder’s Workbench has decorative Crystal blocks in six colors, but they don’t work as windows. You’ll find where to get them in Hytale ores.
If you play in Spanish, an official language since Update 7, in-game names may not match the ones we use here, which come from the official English notes.
Glass with mods
If you want glass blocks right now, the community has released mods that add a glass block you can craft from sand. Many are from January 2026 and haven’t been updated, so before installing one, check that it works with your game version: since Update 7, look on CurseForge for a file tagged 0.7. If you already use windows, Connected Windows makes adjacent windows join into continuous glass panels without repeated frames; check that it has a 0.7 version too. To install any of them, follow how to install mods in Hytale.
