What this mod does

CAT 3408 Straight pipe sound is a sound mod by SlavJerry for American Truck Simulator. It recreates the Caterpillar 3408 V8 engine with a straight pipe, for SCS and modded trucks, especially Peterbilt and Kenworth. It has over 45,000 subscribers on Steam Workshop.

What’s included

• Two engine versions: 400 to 500 hp and 600 to 700 hp.
• Variants with electric start and with air start.
• Since the 3408 doesn’t have a jake-style engine brake, the author added the sound of the CAT Brake Saver.
• Distance attenuation and distortion based on your position around the truck.

The sound was recorded, mixed and mastered by SlavJerry; the engine specs are by Eeldavidgt and vsTerminus.

Version and installation

The page doesn’t state a game version or explain where to pick the engine. It was published on October 26, 2024. Several users say it works on the SCS Peterbilt 389. For a user with a modded Peterbilt 351 who couldn’t hear it, the author recommended checking the game.log and the folder names: you can do that with Holyfix.

Tip

If you use several sounds for the same engine, keep only one enabled so they don’t overwrite each other. It’s about 2.2 MB.

How to install it

1. Open the “CAT 3408 Straight pipe sound” page on Steam Workshop and click “Subscribe”.
2. Launch American Truck Simulator and wait for Steam to finish the download.
3. Open your profile's Mod Manager and enable the mod.
4. Check your truck's engines at the service shop: the page doesn't explain how the sound is assigned.
5. If you can't hear it, analyze your game.log with Holyfix, as the author recommends.
