As of October 23, 2026, American Truck Simulator asks for 25 GB of free space on Steam for the base game, the same on Windows, macOS and Linux. SCS doesn’t publish how much space it takes with every state: the pages of the older DLCs list between 80 and 200 MB, and the pages of the recent states (Texas, Montana, Missouri, Illinois, South Dakota) give no figure at all. Mods can take up more space than the game itself: a single graphics pack weighs 6.54 GB. ATS has no console version.

Source: the Steam page of each DLC, checked on October 23, 2026. We don’t include Oklahoma, Kansas, Nebraska, Arkansas, Iowa or Louisiana because we didn’t check their pages today. The MB figures date from when each state came out and don’t reflect the current size of the content, so you can’t add them up to get a total.
How to check how much space your install takes
Steam shows the exact figure: Library, right-click American Truck Simulator, Properties, Installed Files. There you’ll see the size including the DLCs you own. For planning, our (unofficial) recommendation is to set aside 40-50 GB if you plan to buy lots of states and use mods, and more if you’re going to set up Reforma or other big maps.
How much space ATS mods take
Small mods (sounds, rain, UI) weigh just a few MB; trucks, trailer packs and graphics mods run to hundreds of MB or several GB. Some examples, with the size listed on their Holymod page:
| Mod | Type | Size (mod page) |
|---|---|---|
| Allan’s All-In-One Graphics Fidelity | Graphics | 6.54 GB |
| Traffic Trailer Mega Pack | Traffic trailers | 1.24 GB |
| Late Autumn/Mild Winter | Seasonal graphics | 814 MB |
| Trail King Schnabel | Trailer | 792.8 MB |
| International HX520 2022 | Truck | 673.2 MB |
| Long Freight Trains | Traffic | 574.54 MB |
| Yet Another Rain Mod (YARM) | Rain | 4.96 MB |
The pages of the big maps (Reforma, Coast to Coast and ProMods Canada) don’t list a size. With Reforma, on top of the map you need the Reforma Mega Resources package, which is a separate download, and almost all the state DLCs, so the space adds up from three sides: DLC, map and resources.
SSD or hard drive?
Steam’s requirements don’t ask for an SSD, and ATS runs on a hard drive. With an SSD, profiles load faster, especially with community maps enabled. If you’re running out of room on your SSD, create another Steam library on a second drive and move the game from Properties, Installed Files.
Where mods and saves are stored
- Manual mods: Documents\American Truck Simulator\mod.
- Steam Workshop mods: steamapps\workshop\content\270880 in your Steam library.
- Profiles and saves: Documents\American Truck Simulator\profiles, or steam_profiles if you use Steam Cloud.
How to free up space
- Delete from the mod folder anything that isn’t active in the Mod Manager, plus any .zip/.7z files you’ve already extracted.
- Unsubscribe from Workshop mods you don’t use.
- Before removing a map you have a save on, back up your profile: without that map the game warns you that mods are missing and you may run into problems.
- Don’t delete the profile folders: that’s where your company and your money live.

Frequently asked questions
How many GB is American Truck Simulator?
Steam asks for 25 GB for the base game on Windows, macOS and Linux (as of October 23, 2026). DLCs and mods come on top of that.
How big is ATS with all the DLC?
There’s no official figure. The Steam pages of the older states list between 80 and 200 MB, and the recent ones say nothing. You can see your actual size under Properties, Installed Files.
How big is Reforma?
Its page doesn’t say. You need the map, the Reforma Mega Resources package and the state DLCs Team Reforma requires, so leave a margin of several GB.
Can I install ATS on an external drive?
Yes, like any Steam game, by creating a library on that drive. Loading will be slower if it’s a hard drive over USB.
Does ATS take up more space than Euro Truck Simulator 2?
The base games ask for the same on Steam: 25 GB each.
