ETS2 mods not working or crashing: fixes

If an ETS2 mod won't load or the game crashes with mods, it's almost always the version, load order or a missing DLC. How to read game.log.txt and find it.

Updated: 23 Oct 2026

As of October 23, 2026, with Euro Truck Simulator 2 on version 1.61 (and 1.62 in open beta since October 22), almost every mod problem comes down to four causes: a mod made for a different version, the wrong load order, a missing DLC or mod it depends on, or a misplaced .scs file. To find out which one it is, open game.log.txt (in Documents\Euro Truck Simulator 2) and look for lines marked <ERROR>; if that doesn’t make it clear, disable your mods in halves until you find the culprit.

Shortcut: load your game.log.txt into the Holymod mod analyzer and it will tell you which mod is failing, which ones are for another version of Euro Truck Simulator 2 and which dependencies you’re missing. It’s free and the file never leaves your computer.

Symptom, cause and quick fix

What you see Likely cause What to do
The mod doesn’t show up in the Mod Manager The .scs is still compressed, sits in a subfolder or in a different mod folder (OneDrive) Put the loose .scs files in Documents\Euro Truck Simulator 2\mod
It shows up, but you can’t activate it It’s missing a DLC the mod lists as required Install that DLC or find a version of the mod that doesn’t require it
Marked as incompatible The author didn’t include your version in compatible_versions Download the author’s version for 1.61
Crashes when loading the profile or the map A map for another version, an add-on below its base map or a missing DLC Check the version and order; read game.log.txt
Everything breaks after switching to the 1.62 beta Mods built for 1.61 Steam, Properties, Betas: go back to the stable version
One mod overrides another Two mods change the same thing; the one on top wins Reorder them or keep just one

Step 1: read game.log.txt

The game writes a log every session. According to the official SCS forum, it’s located at:

  • Windows: Documents\Euro Truck Simulator 2\game.log.txt
  • Linux and Steam Deck: ~/.local/share/Euro Truck Simulator 2/game.log.txt
  • macOS: ~/Library/Application Support/Euro Truck Simulator 2

If the game crashes outright, on Windows and Linux you’ll also find game.crash.txt in the same folder (on macOS the report goes to ~/Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports). SCS warns that this file isn’t overwritten when you launch the game: delete it before reproducing the crash so it only contains the current one.

Each line in game.log.txt starts with the session time, and problems are marked with <ERROR>. Look at the last lines before the crash and search for the name of a .scs file or a map. A real example from a player on the Steam forum: <ERROR> Failed to find parent item ... for payload data from '/map/europe/sec-0020+0015.data', followed by «Inconsistent sector data!». That kind of error in a map sector usually points to a mod map that conflicts with another one or doesn’t match your version. If you use OneDrive, make sure you’re reading the log from the Documents folder the game actually uses.

Step 2: incompatible version

SCS’s modding documentation explains that a mod can declare the versions it works with in its manifest.sii (compatible_versions). If your version isn’t on the list, you can’t use it until the author updates it. That field doesn’t apply to Steam Workshop mods. Maps are the most sensitive: always use the exact version their author asks for. If you switched to the 1.62 beta by accident, go back to the stable branch under Properties, Betas; if your mods are stuck on an older version, SCS usually leaves branches with older game versions in that same tab.

Step 3: load order

In the Mod Manager, whatever is higher up takes priority over what’s below. A map add-on goes above its base map; a patch goes above the two mods it connects; and two mods that change the same thing (two physics mods, two weather mods) don’t stack: one overrides the other. The full order by type, with examples, is in our guide to mod load order in ETS2.

Step 4: required DLC and other mods

Since 1.26, a mod can declare the DLC it needs (dlc_dependencies), and the Mod Manager won’t let you activate it if you’re missing any. Large maps often require several: ProMods, for example, needs specific map DLC and its packages have to go in a fixed order, with the DEF file on top. Also check whether the mod depends on another mod (an add-on without its base map won’t work).

Step 5: isolate the culprit (half and half)

  1. Back up your profiles folder (or steam_profiles, if you use Steam Cloud).
  2. Check whether the problem happens without mods. SCS recommends testing with a profile that has never had mods; create a temporary one.
  3. If it works fine without mods, disable half of your list and test.
  4. If the problem persists, the culprit is in the active half; if it goes away, it’s in the other half. Split that half again.
  5. Repeat until you’re down to one. With 40 mods, about six tests are enough.

SCS warns that a profile that has had mods can behave strangely and that removing a mod can leave data behind in the save. So before removing a map you have a save on, back up the profile.

Other common causes

  • OneDrive. If it syncs Documents, the real folder may be OneDrive\Documents\Euro Truck Simulator 2, and it’s often cited on the ETS2 forums as a common source of problems. Move the folder to a local Documents folder.
  • Corrupted game files. In Steam, go to Properties, Installed Files and verify integrity.
  • A .zip inside another archive. The game reads .scs and .zip files with the mod at the root, not an archive that contains another .scs.
  • Downloads from reupload sites. They may contain old or modified versions. Always download from the author’s page.

Frequently asked questions

Why does ETS2 crash when loading a save with mods?

The most common reasons are a map for another version, a missing DLC or an add-on placed below its base map. The last <ERROR> line in game.log.txt usually tells you which one.

Where is game.log.txt?

On Windows, in Documents\Euro Truck Simulator 2. On Linux and Steam Deck, in ~/.local/share/Euro Truck Simulator 2. On macOS, in ~/Library/Application Support/Euro Truck Simulator 2.

Can I use a 1.60 mod on 1.61?

It depends. Many small mods keep working, but if the author restricted the versions in compatible_versions, the game won’t let you use it. Maps almost never work on a different version.

What do I do if the mod doesn’t show up in the Mod Manager?

Make sure the .scs file sits loose in the mod folder (no subfolders, not compressed inside another archive) and that it’s the mod folder the game actually uses, not a copy on OneDrive.

Will removing a mod break my profile?

It can. SCS warns that removing a mod can leave data behind in the save. Back up the profiles folder before removing maps or trucks you’re using.
