What this mod does
Elle’s Cuter Barn Animals takes advantage of the skin system that arrived with 1.6 to add variety to barn animals without needing any extra framework. It’s by Elle (junimods), the author of some of the best-known animal retextures for the game.
What it adds
- 48 skins for white and brown cows, 110 for goats, 67 for sheep (including alpacas), 62 for pigs (including deer and mini pigs that don’t grow up) and 9 for ostriches.
- «Void» variants of each animal, inspired by the void chicken.
- New icons in Marnie’s shop and optional recolors of wool and cloth.
Each animal gets a random skin when you buy it, when it’s born or when it hatches. In the config.json you choose which skins go into the draw and which one replaces the original sprite.
Requirements and compatibility
It only requires SMAPI and Content Patcher. Version 1.0.4 (April 19, 2026, 6 MB) is exclusive to 1.6. It’s compatible with Alternative Textures, which can use the enabled skins.
Heads-up for multiplayer: the author warns that every player must have the mod with the same skins enabled, or there will be texture errors and even crashes. Otherwise, turn off the skins and use only the default replacements. It conflicts with any other mod that replaces the same animal. It has no text to translate.

How to install it
- Install SMAPI and Content Patcher first (see their mod pages) and launch the game once with SMAPI to make sure everything loads.
- Open the Elle's Cuter Barn Animals page on Nexus Mods, go to the Files tab and click Manual download on the main file (Cuter Barn Animals 1.0.4). You need a free Nexus account to download.
- Unzip the .zip outside the game folder and move the resulting folder into the Mods folder, inside the game folder.
- Launch the game once with SMAPI so the config.json is generated, then close it.
- Edit the config.json to choose the active skins and each animal's default skin; the mod's references folder shows the options.

Common problems
Does it change the look of the animals I already have?
Skins are assigned when an animal is bought, born or hatched. The animals you already have will use the default skin you pick in the config.json.
Do I need Alternative Textures?
No. It works with just Content Patcher thanks to 1.6; Alternative Textures is optional and compatible.
Does it work in multiplayer?
Yes, but everyone must have the mod with the same skins enabled. The alternative is to use only the default replacements.
