As of October 23, 2026, Hytale asks for an SSD with at least 10 GB free as the minimum and 20 GB as the recommended amount, according to its official download page. The install itself is around 8 GB, according to the Hytale team; the rest is headroom for updates and saved worlds. It’s not on Steam or consoles: you download it with the official launcher on Windows, Linux and Apple Silicon Macs. Mods are small, almost always under 50 MB.

The current version is 0.7.3 (Early Access). In December 2025 the studio asked for a SATA SSD at minimum and NVMe for recommended specs, and advised leaving 20 GB free for long-term play. For anyone recording or streaming, it recommends an NVMe drive with at least 10% (or 50 GB) free and a separate drive for recordings.
SSD or hard drive?
Hytale asks for an SSD at both requirement tiers. It doesn’t mention mechanical hard drives, but the game generates and loads terrain nonstop while you explore, which is exactly where an HDD falls short. If you’re low on SSD space, Hytale is small: it fits easily.
How much space Hytale mods take up
Hytale mods are small compared to driving sim mods. Examples with the size listed on their Holymod mod page:

Most gameplay, weapon or decoration mods are under 20 MB. Even with 50 mods active you wouldn’t get close to the size of the game. What does grow over time is your saved worlds, especially if you explore a lot or run a server.
Where mods and worlds are stored
- Windows: %APPDATA%\Hytale\UserData\Mods for global mods and %APPDATA%\Hytale\UserData\Saves for worlds.
- macOS: ~/Library/Application Support/Hytale/UserData/Mods.
- Linux: $XDG_DATA_HOME/Hytale/UserData/Mods.
- Single-world mods: UserData/Saves/<world name>/mods.
How to free up space
- Delete worlds you no longer play from the Saves folder (back up the ones you want to keep first).
- Remove mods you don’t use from UserData\Mods; with the 0.7 updates, several of them stop working anyway.
- Don’t keep world backups inside the game folder: move them to another drive.

Steam Deck, Mac and Linux
The official site now lists Linux x64 (kernel 6.15) and Apple Silicon Macs on macOS Tahoe 26. As for Steam Deck, the studio said in December 2025 that it should work on paper, but that it hadn’t tested it. On any of them, plan on the same 10-20 GB free.
