There are two ways to install mods in Farming Simulator 22. On PC and Mac, download the mod from the in-game ModHub or copy its .zip file, without unzipping it, into the Documents > My Games > FarmingSimulator2022 > mods folder. On PS4, PS5, Xbox One and Xbox Series you can only use the ModHub in the game menu. Either way, the mod does nothing until you activate it when you create or load a savegame. Here are the steps, maps, dependencies and the most common errors.
Before you start
- Update the game. The latest version of FS22 is 1.14. Some mods already require it: the Neu-Minibrunn map, for example, needs patch 1.14.0.0 or later.
- Only download from official sources. Use the GIANTS ModHub (in-game or on farming-simulator.com) or the author’s website. Sites that collect other people’s mods often reupload them without permission or with old versions. Holymod doesn’t host files: every mod page links to the official download.
- Each game has its own mods. FS19 and FS25 mods don’t work in FS22, and vice versa. Make sure the mod is for Farming Simulator 22; the file name usually starts with
FS22_. - Back up your savegame. If you’re going to test mods on an advanced farm, copy its savegame folder first.
Installing mods from the in-game ModHub
It’s the easiest method and the only one available on console. ModHub mods are reviewed by GIANTS Software before they’re published, and they’re free.
- From the main menu, open the downloadable content option (ModHub).
- Browse by category (maps, tractors, harvesters, buildings…) or search by name.
- Open the mod and hit download. If it needs other mods, the game tells you and offers to download them.
- Create or load a savegame and activate it on the mod selection screen.
On PC, mods you download from the in-game ModHub are saved to the right folder automatically, so you don’t have to move anything.
Manual install on PC: the mods folder
If you download the mod from the ModHub website or from its author’s page, you’ll have to copy it yourself. That’s usually the case with scripts that aren’t on the ModHub, like TerraFarm, which you download from its author’s GitHub.
Where the mods folder is on Windows
It’s in Documents > My Games > FarmingSimulator2022 > mods, inside your Windows user folder. If the FarmingSimulator2022 folder doesn’t exist, open the game once and close it; if only mods is missing, create it with that exact name, in lowercase. If your Documents folder syncs with OneDrive, the real path is usually inside OneDrive (OneDrive > Documents > My Games…). Some players link that syncing to mods not showing up; if it happens to you, try using a folder outside OneDrive.
Where it is on Mac
On macOS the game data lives in your user Library: Library > Application Support > FarmingSimulator2022 > mods. Depending on how you installed the game, it may be inside Library > Containers. The Library is hidden: in Finder, open the Go menu and hold the Option key to make it appear.
Steps
- Download the mod. It’s almost always a
.zipfile. - Don’t unzip it. The game reads the
.zipas is. The only exception is a pack containing several mods: extract that outer archive to get each mod’s.zipand copy those. - Copy it into the mods folder, loose, not inside subfolders.
- Don’t rename it. Savegames and mods that depend on it look for it by name. Also, the game only accepts unaccented letters, numbers and underscores, and doesn’t allow the name to start with a number.
- Open the game and activate it in your savegame.
Changing the mods folder
If you’d rather keep your mods on another drive, the gameSettings.xml file (in the FarmingSimulator2022 folder) has a modsDirectoryOverride line. Change active="false" to active="true" and enter the new path in directory, using forward slashes (for example, D:/ModsFS22). Back up the file before touching it and edit it with the game closed.
Activating mods in each savegame
Mods aren’t activated for the whole game but savegame by savegame. When you create a new savegame or load an existing one, the mod selection screen appears: check the ones you want to use on that farm. You can add mods to a savegame you’ve already started by loading it again and checking them.
Removing mods is trickier. If you deactivate a tractor, shed or factory you have on your farm, it disappears from the savegame and doesn’t come back even if you reactivate the mod later. Before removing anything, save a copy of the savegame folder.
Mods on PS4, PS5, Xbox One and Xbox Series
On console you can’t copy files or download mods from other websites: only ModHub mods work, from the game menu. There are also some limits worth knowing:
- No scripts. Mods that add code don’t come to console. CoursePlay, Guidance Steering, LumberJack and Automatic Watering System are PC/Mac only.
- Not everything makes it. Each mod is reviewed separately for console. Very large maps like Krajeńskie Pola or Krajow And Lazniki stay on PC/Mac. On the ModHub website, the «Crossplay» filter shows the ones that are also on console, and every Holymod mod page lists the platforms.
- Space is limited. GIANTS doesn’t publish the figure, but large maps take up a lot. Delete mods you no longer use.
- Official content is there. The free Precision Farming DLC and mods published by GIANTS, like the CLAAS JAGUAR 980-930, work on PC and console.
You’ll find more details on versions and crossplay in the Farming Simulator 22 on consoles guide.
Map mods: always in a new savegame
You choose the map when you create the savegame, and you can’t change it later. To play a mod map, install it like any other mod, create a new savegame and pick it at the map selection step. Read its description first, because many maps need other mods:
- El Villarejo and Lands Of La Mancha each need three ModHub mods.
- Neu-Minibrunn needs three decoration mods by the same author.
- Krajeńskie Pola has up to 50 dependencies and is PC/Mac only.
- Castile And Leon: New Horizon supports at most 9 extra crops or productions from other mods.
If you want a hassle-free start, No Man’s Land and Calmsden Farm don’t need any extra mods and are also on console. You’ll find them all in the FS22 maps section.
Dependencies: mods that need other mods
It’s not just maps that have dependencies. Some vehicles and objects use parts, scripts or packs from other mods. For example, the Rumbler Tow Car needs two mods by the same author. If you download from the in-game ModHub, dependencies are listed and the game offers to download them. If you install manually, read the author’s description and download each dependency from its official source. A mod missing a dependency usually doesn’t show up in the list or can’t be activated.
Mods in multiplayer
In an online game the host or server is in charge: when you join, the game tells you which mods you need and, if they’re from the ModHub, lets you download them. Everyone has to use the same version of each mod. Console players can only join games that use ModHub mods available on console; if the server runs scripts like CoursePlay, they’re left out.
Common errors and how to read log.txt
When something goes wrong, the game records it in log.txt, in the Documents > My Games > FarmingSimulator2022 folder. Open it with Notepad and look for lines with Error or Warning: they usually name the file causing the problem.
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| The mod doesn’t show up in the list | It’s unzipped, in another folder, or for FS19/FS25 | Leave the .zip loose in mods and check it’s for FS22 |
| The log says «Invalid mod name» | The file has spaces, accents or a «(1)» from a repeated download | Delete the duplicate copy or remove the suffix to restore the original name |
| The mod is in the list but won’t activate | It’s missing a dependency | Install the mods listed in its description |
| A map won’t load or is missing buildings | Required mods are missing or the game version differs | Check the dependencies and update FS22 to 1.14 |
| Machines have disappeared from the farm | The mod was deactivated or deleted | Restore the savegame backup; reactivating the mod doesn’t bring them back |
| A mod doesn’t show up on console | It’s a script or hasn’t been released for console | Look for an alternative with the ModHub «Crossplay» filter |
