What this mod does
Nyapu’s Portraits (on Nexus, «Nyapu’s Portraits inspired by Dong») replaces the dialogue portraits with anime-style pixel art drawn by Nyapu. It’s one of the most popular portrait packs, and many NPC mods already include a «Nyapu version» option.
What’s included
- The main Content Patcher file, for the base game characters.
- Optional packs for expansions and modded NPCs: Stardew Valley Expanded, Ridgeside Village, Lunna, Downtown Zuzu, Alecto, Distant Lands and others.
- Mods like East Scarp, Sword and Sorcery or Stardew Aquarium come with the Nyapu option built in.
Requirements and compatibility
It requires SMAPI and Content Patcher. The main file 1.6.9 (November 4, 2024, 1.5 MB) is for the base game only and requires 1.6.9 or later. The optional packs aren’t copied into Mods as they are: you unzip them and their inner folder replaces the one in the original mod, following the instructions on the page.
Known issues: it can’t be combined with seasonal outfit mods that change the same portraits; you have to pick one. There’s an XNB version that the author advises against, and she warns that the files aren’t meant for Vortex. Since it’s only images, it doesn’t need translating.

Requirements
- Stardew Valley 1.6.9 or later (PC)
- SMAPI 4.x
- Content Patcher
- For the optional packs, each NPC or expansion mod in the specified version
How to install it
- Install SMAPI and Content Patcher first (see their mod pages) and launch the game once with SMAPI to make sure everything loads.
- Open the Nyapu's Portraits page on Nexus Mods, go to the Files tab and click Manual download on the main file (Nyapu's Portraits inspired by Dong (CP) 1.6.9). You need a free Nexus account to download.
- Unzip the .zip outside the game folder and move the [CP] Nyapu's Portraits folder into the Mods folder, inside the game folder.
- For NPCs from other mods, download the matching optional pack, unzip it and use the folder inside it to overwrite the folder with the same name inside the original mod (don't copy it into Mods as is, or you'll get an empty folder error).
- Launch the game with SMAPI and check that the portraits change when you talk to the villagers.

Common problems
Does it work with seasonal outfit mods?
Not at the same time: the author says it can't be used with seasonal costumes or outfits, so you have to choose one or the other.
Do I need to download a pack for SVE?
Yes. The main file is for the base game only; there's a separate pack for SVE (also as a Content Patcher version for SVE 1.15.6).
Should I use the XNB version?
It's not recommended: it replaces game files and the author herself warns it can break the game. Use the Content Patcher version.
