Pure vs Sol in Assetto Corsa: differences and which to use

Pure or Sol for Assetto Corsa: free or paid, Custom Shaders Patch compatibility, performance and which filters work with each one in 2026.

Updated: 24 Oct 2026

As of October 23, 2026, the short answer is Pure if you have an up-to-date Custom Shaders Patch (CSP): it’s the successor to Sol, made by the same author (Peter Boese), it keeps getting new versions and it’s the one almost every new filter requires. The catch is that it’s a paid subscription on Patreon or Gumroad (US$1.50 a month, according to its mod page). Sol is free, but it’s been abandoned since version 2.2.9 in January 2024, and its official page says it doesn’t work with CSP 0.2.10 or later: only use it if your install, your server or your league is staying on CSP 0.2.9 or earlier.

What each one is

Neither is just a «filter». Both replace Assetto Corsa’s weather and lighting system through Custom Shaders Patch: they change the sky, the sun, the clouds, the fog, the light at each time of day and the post-processing. Sol came out in 2019 and was free for its whole life; its author declared it finished and explains that making it work with newer CSP versions would mean rewriting it from scratch. Pure is that rewrite, far more advanced in every area according to the author himself, but it’s funded through a subscription.

Compatibility with Custom Shaders Patch

This is the key to choosing. Sol works from CSP 0.1.76 to 0.2.9; its page says it doesn’t work with CSP 0.2.10 or later, although in the replies the author lists 0.2.9 and 0.2.10p1 as the last compatible versions, and some users say it works with 0.3 preview builds. Since the official information is contradictory, treat 0.2.9 as the safe limit. Pure, on the other hand, is designed for the current CSP, and most filters require specific versions of both.

Performance

There’s no official FPS comparison. What is clear is that both Sol and Pure, along with CSP, cut FPS quite a bit compared with vanilla Assetto Corsa, as we cover in Assetto Corsa requirements. In both cases the biggest cost is usually reflections and shadows: Sol, for example, lets you limit the reflection update rate and lower their resolution to 1024 × 1024. If your PC is borderline, try the CSP settings first before blaming the mod.

Filters: which one works with each

The post-processing filter sits on top of the weather mod and is almost always made for one of the two. These are the ones we’ve published in Assetto Corsa graphics:

Filter For Requirements listed on its mod page
C13 AEGIS Pure LCS only Pure 3.54 or later; CSP 0.2.11 (0.3.0 recommended)
SKY Pure (the Sol version is no longer updated) Pure 3.10 and CSP 0.3.0-preview212
Vision Reality Pure Pure 0.254 and CSP 0.2.3-preview211
Premier Pure only Pure .254 recommended
A3PP Pure (no longer compatible with Sol) Pure 0.222 or later
Natural Mod PP Filter Pure LCS Up-to-date CSP
PureLIFE Pure; also converted for Sol Pure 0.238 or later
NatuReal Pure and Sol (a version for each) CSP
Photorealistic Filter Sol only Sol 2.2 and CSP
Inmersive Filter Sol Sol 1.5.1 or 1.6 alpha1; ReShade optional
Horizon Shades Sol Built on Sol; the author no longer updates it

If you use Sol, your filter options shrink and most of them won’t get any more updates. A Sol filter doesn’t work properly on Pure or vice versa, unless its mod page says otherwise.

Choose Pure if…

  • You have up-to-date Content Manager and CSP, or you’re going to install them.
  • You want to use current filters (C13 AEGIS, SKY, Vision Reality, Premier…).
  • You play on servers or with recent mods that require newer CSP versions.
  • A small subscription is worth it to you for a mod that keeps getting better.

Choose Sol if…

  • You don’t want to pay and you’re fine with a mod that gets no updates.
  • Your server, league or install uses CSP 0.2.9 or earlier and you’re not going to change it.
  • You use a filter that only exists for Sol, such as Photorealistic Filter.

How to switch from Sol to Pure

Both are enabled from Content Manager, in the Custom Shaders Patch settings: you enable Weather FX and choose the weather script. Only one can be active, so once Pure is installed you just select it instead of Sol and then pick a filter made for Pure. Before anything else, update CSP to the version your filter requires. The general steps for installing content are in how to install mods in Assetto Corsa.

Frequently asked questions

Is Pure free?

No. Pure is available through a subscription on Patreon or Gumroad (US$1.50 a month according to its mod page). If you cancel, you keep the version you already downloaded, but you don’t get new ones. Sol is free.

Does Sol work with CSP 0.3?

Officially, no: Sol’s page says it doesn’t work with CSP 0.2.10 or later. Some users say it works with 0.3 preview builds, but that’s not guaranteed. If you want a current CSP, use Pure.

Can I have Sol and Pure installed at the same time?

You can have both sets of files, but only one can be the active weather script in Custom Shaders Patch. Pick one in Content Manager and use a filter made for it.

Do Pure or Sol work in Assetto Corsa EVO or on console?

No. Both are only for the original Assetto Corsa on PC with Custom Shaders Patch. Neither EVO, Competizione nor the PS4 or Xbox versions support these mods.

Which filter should I use with Pure?

It depends on what you’re after: C13 AEGIS and SKY go for photorealism, Vision Reality stands out for its reflections and skies, and PureLIFE for a natural look. They’re all in Assetto Corsa graphics.
