Stardew Valley clothing and portrait mods: hair and more

Stardew Valley clothing and portrait mods: Fashion Sense, animated hairstyles, outfits, a new farmer body and the best villager portrait packs.

Updated: 24 Oct 2026

Stardew Valley clothing and portrait mods fall into two groups. To dress your farmer, the foundation is Fashion Sense, a framework you add packs of animated hairstyles, clothing and accessories to, such as Shardust’s Animated Hairstyles or Wabi’s Wardrobe. To change the villagers’ faces there are portrait mods, such as Nyapu’s Portraits or mono’s Portraits. They all work on PC and Steam Deck with SMAPI and version 1.6. In this guide we explain how they fit together, what each one needs and which mods you shouldn’t mix.

What you can change without mods

The base game already allows some customization. You pick your look when you create your character, and later you can change it at the Shrine of Illusions, in the basement of the Wizard’s Tower. It unlocks at 4 friendship hearts with him and costs 500g each time.

Mods expand on this in three ways: clothes and hairstyles the game doesn’t have (including animated ones), changing your look whenever you want without paying or traveling, and portraits in a different style for the villagers.

Fashion Sense: the foundation of clothing mods

Fashion Sense, by PeacefulEnd, is the go-to framework. It supports hairstyles, hats, shirts, sleeves, pants, shoes and accessories that are bigger than the game’s and, above all, animated. On its own it adds no clothing: it needs content packs. According to Nexus, almost 900 mods use it.

  • Requirements: SMAPI and Stardew Valley 1.6.14 or later. Version 7.5.0 is from March 2026.
  • How to use it: buy the Hand Mirror from Pierre or start with one by ticking the option when you create your character. Using it opens a menu to choose hairstyles, clothing and accessories from the installed packs. You can also type fs_add_mirror in the SMAPI console.
  • Extras: it saves outfits, shares them between saves and dresses mannequins. It has controller support and works in multiplayer.
  • Uninstalling: throw away the Hand Mirror before removing it. If you delete the packs, your farmer goes back to their original look.

When a clothing pack fails, first check that you have the latest version of Fashion Sense. Several creators warn that their clothes don’t work without it.

Hairstyles

  • Shardust’s Animated Hairstyles: 155 animated hairstyles that move when you walk and run and can be dyed like the originals. Braids, buns, ponytails, locs, afros and buzz cuts. There’s a «Brighter» version for pastel or white shades and a «Prismatic» one with colors that shift on their own. The creator adds five hairstyles every quarter; the latest update is from September 2026.
  • Kyuya’s Hairstyles Pack: all of Kyuya’s hairstyles in a single download. In 2.0.0 they were redrawn in grayscale so they dye better. If you don’t like one, delete it from the mod’s Hairs folder.

Clothing and accessories

  • FS Wabi’s Wardrobe (2.0.1): shirts, pants, skirts, dresses and jackets that layer over other clothes. It’s one of the most popular clothing packs. Known issue: some pieces look wrong when running or carrying items, and with long hair the arms can disappear.
  • FS The Coquette Collection (2.0.1): from the same creator, coquette-style dresses, skirts and tops with bows and ruffles. You can mix them separately or wear them as a dress.
  • Katy’s Closet No.2 – Forest Friends: forest-animal outfits with 16 shirts, 16 skirts and shorts, 16 hats and animated fox and raccoon tails.
  • SH’s Animals and Myths Pack (1.5.7): more than 170 dyeable, animated pieces, such as ears, tails, horns, wings, antennae and beaks. Use it to create elves, fairies, mermaids or demons. Almost everything is an accessory, so the pieces combine with each other.

All of them need SMAPI and Fashion Sense, and you choose them from the Hand Mirror. Wabi’s Wardrobe and The Coquette Collection require 1.6.9 or later.

A new body for your farmer

More Elegant Farmer Body (5.0.5), by Kyuya, replaces the farmer’s body with a slimmer one, with redrawn arms, legs and proportions. It includes twelve softer skin tones, robe styles for the spa and an optional mannequin. It needs Content Patcher, and the creator recommends Generic Mod Config Menu.

Heads up: it isn’t compatible with most hairstyles, clothing and accessories made for other bodies. If you use it, pick packs designed for it, such as the creator’s own hairstyle pack. If a clothing mod includes its own robe, it overlaps with this mod’s robe and you’ll need to delete that texture.

Change your look anytime

Customize Anywhere (1.4.2, maintained by Pathoschild) opens the customization screen and a wardrobe with all the game’s clothing, including clothing from other mods, wherever you are. The shortcuts are Left Shift + 1 (customization), + 2 (dyeing), + 3 (tailoring) and + 4 (clothing catalog). Robin sells a mirror and a catalog for 50,000g each, and you can also craft them. It requires 1.6.15 or later and SMAPI 4.1.10. It works in multiplayer and, if you remove it, your look is kept.

Villager portrait mods

Portraits are the faces shown next to the dialogue. There are three ways to change them, and they don’t all install the same way:

Mod Style How it installs What it covers
Nyapu’s Portraits Anime-style pixel art Content Patcher Base game, with packs for SVE, Ridgeside Village and many mod NPCs
mono’s Portraits Redraw close to the original Content Patcher All base-game villagers, with winter and JojaMart outfits
Lili’s Portraits Detailed, soft anime .xnb files in Content\Portraits All villagers, with island and winter outfits
Wenhua’s Character Portraits High-definition anime Pack for Portraiture The twelve marriage candidates

Nyapu’s Portraits

It’s one of the most popular portrait packs, so much so that many character mods ship a «Nyapu version». East Scarp, Sword and Sorcery and Stardew Aquarium include it. The main file (1.6.9) covers the base game. The packs for Stardew Valley Expanded or Ridgeside Village are installed by replacing a folder in those mods, following the instructions on the page. The creator warns that her files aren’t meant for Vortex.

mono’s Portraits

It redraws the portraits at the same scale as the originals, so it fits the rest of the game’s art. Version 0.96 is from March 2026 and is marked as Android-compatible. It doesn’t cover characters from expansions, who keep their own portraits.

Lili’s Portraits

It doesn’t use Content Patcher: its files replace the game’s. That’s why it doesn’t need SMAPI, but back up the Portraits folder before installing it. An update or a file verification on Steam can bring back the original portraits.

Wenhua’s Character Portraits

It works with Portraiture, a mod that allows higher-resolution portraits. The folder goes inside Portraiture’s Portraits subfolder, and in-game the P key switches between the available portraits. It needs the latest version of SMAPI and Portraiture.

Compatibility and conflicts

  • One portrait mod per character. Two mods that change the same portraits clash. Use one or decide which loads last. Portraiture is the exception: it allows several packs and switching between them.
  • Portraits and seasonal outfits. Nyapu’s Portraits can’t be combined with seasonal outfit mods that change the same portraits.
  • Body and clothing. More Elegant Farmer Body clashes with most clothing made for the original body.
  • The dialogue box. If you also want to change the frame, the hearts or the text position, Dialogue Display Framework Continued lets you, and it’s compatible with Portraiture and portrait recolors.
  • Mod characters. Some let you choose the portrait style. Romanceable Rasmodia, for example, has original, CreepyKat or Nyapu options.

If you also want to change how the map, buildings or animals look, you’ll find everything in the graphics mods and decoration sections.

Frequently asked questions

How do I change my farmer’s clothes with mods?

Install SMAPI, Fashion Sense and one or more clothing packs. In-game, buy the Hand Mirror at Pierre’s shop and pick your clothes from its menu.

Why aren’t my Fashion Sense hairstyles showing up?

Usually Fashion Sense is missing or out of date. Check in the SMAPI console that it loads without errors and that the pack appears in the list. Remember that hairstyles are chosen from the Hand Mirror, not at the Shrine of Illusions.

Can I use two portrait mods at once?

Only if they change different characters. If both change the same villagers, they overwrite each other. With Portraiture you can have several packs and switch between them with the P key.

Do Nyapu’s portraits work with Stardew Valley Expanded?

Yes, with its optional SVE pack, which is installed by replacing a folder in the mod following the instructions on the page. Make sure the pack matches your SVE version.

Will I lose my look if I remove these mods?

With Fashion Sense, your farmer goes back to their original look when you remove the packs; throw away the Hand Mirror first. With Customize Anywhere, your look is kept.
