Best ETS2 maps for 1.61: top picks and compatibility

The best ETS2 maps for version 1.61: ProMods and its expansions, Russia, Japan, regional maps, add-ons and how to combine them in one profile.

Updated: 23 Oct 2026

The best ETS2 maps for version 1.61 are, right now, ProMods with its official expansions (Middle East, Maghreb and The Great Steppe), Project Russia for Russia, Grand Utopia as a fictional map and Project Japan if you want something completely different. Beyond those, what really makes the difference are the regional maps and the add-ons that polish specific areas. Below you’ll find them grouped, with version, required DLC and how to combine them. They’re all free except for the paid extras we point out.

Before you install: version, DLC and profile

Three checks prevent most map problems:

  • Exact version. A map made for 1.60 can stop your save from loading in 1.61. In this guide we list the version of each one and keep the ones that haven’t been updated yet in a separate section.
  • Map DLC. Almost every big map requires the official DLCs (Going East!, Scandinavia, Vive la France!, Italia, Beyond the Baltic Sea, Road to the Black Sea, Iberia, West Balkans, Greece and Nordic Horizons). If a map lists a DLC as a dependency and you don’t own it, the Mod Manager won’t let you activate it. You’ll find a rundown of every expansion in our ETS2 DLC guide.
  • Test profile. Back up your profile or create a new one before activating a big map. Standalone maps (Project Japan, Peru Roads, Central Bohemia, RTXMAP) need a new profile and you have to pick their module when you create it.

Some very large maps, like Paris 1:1, also ask you to raise r_buffer_page_size to 30 in config.cfg. If this is your first time with mods, start with how to install mods in ETS2.

Major expansions

ProMods and its official expansions

ProMods Europe is still the benchmark: it rebuilds and expands a large part of the European map. We don’t have a mod page for the main package, but we walk you through the process in how to install ProMods in ETS2. For 1.61, its expansions require ProMods 2.84. They’re a free download with registration on promods.net; the official store offers an optional paid direct download ($1.20).

  • ProMods Middle East (2.84): Turkey, Syria, Lebanon, Israel, Jordan, Egypt, Iraq and Saudi Arabia. It doesn’t work without ProMods Europe.
  • ProMods Maghreb (1.0.4): North Africa. If you combine it with ProMods Europe, it goes at a higher priority than the main package.
  • ProMods The Great Steppe (1.7.0): western Kazakhstan, the Russian border and Turkmenistan. It works on its own or together with ProMods Europe.

Project Russia (and RusMap)

Project Russia 5.7.1a covers central Russia with more than 40 cities (Moscow, Arkhangelsk, Voronezh, Yaroslavl). It was released for 1.59 and its download page also lists it for 1.60 and 1.61, although the changelog has no dedicated entry for 1.61. It requires all ten map DLCs. RusMap is the other big community map of Russia and is often combined with it; we don’t have it in the directory, so check its version on the author’s website before mixing them.

Country and regional maps

  • WBPD: West Balkans Expansion (5.7, 1.60 and 1.61): new cities in Croatia, Bosnia and Serbia. Requires the West Balkans DLC. With ProMods it needs the separate WBPD-ProMods-280-Fix patch.
  • Sweden Extended (Vänern Project) (4.2, 1.61): fills in gaps in Sweden (Säffle, Mariestad, Gällivare, Jokkmokk) and adds Drammen in Norway. All map DLCs; ProMods compatibility not confirmed.
  • Italy Map Project (V15, 1.61): rebuilds the A22 and A4, Genoa and Verona, and adds Trento, Siena, Reggio Calabria and the islands of Elba and Giglio. Requires Italia and Vive la France!; there’s a compatibility add-on for ProMods.
  • Santiago de Compostela (17, 1.61): Santiago, Padrón, Caldas de Reis and the N-550 down to Pontevedra. It only requires Iberia; ProMods compatibility isn’t confirmed. If you’re interested in the Iberian Peninsula, also check out our guide to ETS2 in Spain.
  • SJMap (R8, 1.60 and 1.61): Svalbard, Jan Mayen, Camp Barneo or Alert in Canada. It puts fun ahead of realism and supports ProMods through a fix by hi sora.
  • Oberhavel Map Addon (1.7.4, 1.61): a small expansion north of Berlin, with a standard version and a ProMods version.

Standalone and fantasy maps

  • Grand Utopia (1.20d, 1.61): a fictional French-inspired archipelago at 1:1 scale, with more than 50 cities and its own highways. Free; the author’s Patreon gives early access and paid extras. European Grand Utopia (1.12) connects it to Europe, needs Grand Utopia 1.20d and nine map DLCs, and states support for ProMods 2.84.
  • Project Japan (1.1.11, 1.61): Japanese roads at 1:10 scale (Hokuriku, Shikoku, Kansai). Separate module, ten map DLCs, 7-Zip to join the .zip.001 and .zip.002, and download only from ets2.jp.
  • Peru Roads (0.8.14, 1.61): Nazca, Ica or the Chancay megaport. New profile, and don’t mix it with ProMods.
  • Panamerica Map (b1.4, 1.61): a beta of Argentine Patagonia (Puerto Madryn, Trelew, Rawson). Supports map combos.
  • JRR – Indonesia (0.92a, 1.59 to 1.61): Jakarta and western Java with left-hand traffic. No DLC required.

Real-scale rebuilds

  • Paris 1:1 Map (1.61): almost half the city is drivable, with more than 650 custom models and deliveries to metro stations. It’s a work in progress with dead-end streets. About 900 MB and ten map DLCs.
  • Central Bohemia Project (0.2.6, 1.61): Central Bohemia at 1:2 scale, with Prague’s outer ring road and sections of the D0, D5 and D6. Standalone: it isn’t compatible with ProMods or with other maps in the same profile.

ProMods add-ons

These don’t expand the map: they rebuild areas that already exist in ProMods. All of them go above ProMods in the Mod Manager.

  • Slovensko+ (4.7): renews the D1, I/66 and I/16 and adds the I/75 in Slovakia. For ProMods 2.84.
  • Silesia Rebuild (1.7.6): Tychy, Bytom or Mikołów in southern Poland. NOPR variant (ProMods only) or PR (with Poland Rebuilding).
  • Portugal Rebuild (0.1.9): new cities, a rebuilt A3 and real-life gas stations. Requires ProMods and Iberia.
  • Danmark Refined (2.4): improves Danish cities and the Aarhus–Rostock ferry. ProMods 2.84.
  • Bulgaria in Focus (1.38): more than 250 custom models and revamped Sofia and Plovdiv. Compatible with ROEX.
  • Črni Kal (Koper + A1 Rework) (1.1): the Črni Kal viaduct and the port of Koper, in a variant with or without ProMods.

Off-road

RTXMAP Off-road Map (1.2, 1.61) is a standalone map at 1:10 scale with dirt tracks, forests and mountains, focused on timber hauling. New profile with the rtxmap.mbd module.

From 1.58 to 1.60: good, but no 1.61 version yet

These maps are worth it, but they’re not confirmed for 1.61. Only use them if you keep an install on their version (with Steam betas) or once the author releases the update.

Map compatibility: combos and load order

A “map combo” is a set of maps that share a profile. It works as long as you follow these rules:

  1. Standalone maps get their own profile. Project Japan, Peru Roads, Central Bohemia and RTXMAP are played with their own module and profile; don’t mix them with ProMods or other big maps.
  2. Small on top, big at the bottom. Add-ons and connectors that modify an area go above the map they modify. With ProMods, each add-on’s def file goes above its map file, and both go above ProMods (that’s how Slovensko+ asks for it, for example).
  3. ProMods’ official expansions have their own spot. They don’t all go in the same position relative to the main package: follow the layout on promods.net.
  4. No overlaps. Two maps that rebuild the same region (for example, two versions of Poland) will clash. Silesia Rebuild solves this with its PR variant for Poland Rebuilding; WBPD needs its patch for ProMods.
  5. Same ProMods version across the whole combo. Each add-on is tied to one version: the 2.83 ones aren’t meant for 2.84.

As an example, a European combo for 1.61 could look like this, from top to bottom: Slovensko+, Silesia Rebuild (NOPR), Danmark Refined, Bulgaria in Focus and ProMods Europe 2.84 (they all need to sit above ProMods). Test it first in a separate profile. If you add Grand Utopia, place European Grand Utopia and Grand Utopia following their author’s instructions. You’ll find the full explanation of priorities in our guide to ETS2 mod load order, and the full list of what works today in mods compatible with 1.61.
